Wholly Moses is a religious spoof that asks the question, "Did God choose Moses to be his messenger, or was it another boy set down in the river on that day?" The other boy, Herschel (Dudley Moore) is found by the slave Hyssop (James Coco) and is raised as his own son. Herschel lives a relatively peaceful life as an idol maker and eventually meets and marries Zerelda (Laraine Newman). However, one day Herschel hears God talking to Moses and mistakenly believes that God is actually speaking to him. From there, his life begins to parallel that of Moses as Herschel sets out to do God's will. Unfortunately, things don't ever seem to work out as well for Herschel as they do for Moses. All of this is told from the perspective of the modern-day versions of Herschel and Zerelda - Harvey and Zoey - as they discover a manuscript while on a tour of the Holy Land and find out what God's true purpose for Herschel actually was.moreless
