Wide Awake is a 2006 documentary from acclaimed independent writer-director Alan Berliner, who also stars in this intriguing account of Berliner's struggles with insomnia, as he gathers expert information on the nature of his disorder and wonders if the positive effects of his sleeplessness outweigh the negative aspects. For as long as he can remember, Alan Berliner has suffered from a sleep disorder that prevents him from getting more than four hours of rest per night, and often much less than that. His lack of sleep causes him to feel irritable and fatigued during his waking hours. However, Berliner is also an extremely productive artist, and he does most of his work during his sleepless hours of the night. This film presents a biography of Berliner's life and shares some information on the nature of his disorder. Berliner knows he suffers from an illness, but since it's become such an integral part of his life and career, would he choose to get better if someone offered a cure?
