Wide Sargasso Sea is a dramatic film directed by Brendan Maher that is an adaptation of the Jean Rhys award-winning novel of the same name, which acts as a prequel to Charlotte Bronte’s famous Jane Eyre with the story of how Mrs. Rochester, Antoinette “Bertha” Cosway (Rebecca Hall), first met Mr. Rochester (Rafe Spall). Known solely as the lunatic in the attic in Bronte’s novel, Mrs. Rochester is finally given an identity in 19th century Jamaica as a Creole, a person of mixed racial heritage, who inherited a struggling plantation. Intelligent and strong-willed, Antoinette tries to run it herself with the help of the slaves and her family, knowing that the land is rich enough for them to get back on the right foot though racial prejudice continues to swirl around her life. When brooding Edward Rochester arrives from England to seek his fortune, they begin a torrid love affair that turns into a cold and overbearing marriage with paranoia and growing madness distances them even further. Antoinette’s sanity slowly begins to shatter and results in Edward’s ultimate decision to return to England. Wide Sargasso Sea offers an interesting and robust tale to lead into any of the Jane Eyre adaptations.moreless
