Wilby Wonderful (2004) is a dark comedy centering on a day in the lives of locals on the Nova Scotian island of Wilby. In spite of their differences, each character is bound in some way to the next by his or her need for validation and a need to love and be loved. The story begins with video rental shopkeeper Dan Jarvis (James Allodi), a suicidal man whose marriage has dissolved on the heels of his abrupt public "outing" as a homosexual. Director Daniel MacIvor weaves Jarvis' story with the lives of his fellow islanders; a restaurateur and her teenage daughter (Ellen Page), a high-strung real estate agent (Sandra Oh), and other members of the conservative community. Wilby Mayor Brent Fisher (Maury Chakin) fights to keep his underhanded dealings out of the public eye, married police officer Buddy French (Paul Gross) attempts to resist the advances of his childhood sweetheart, and resident gossip-hound Elaine Fisher (Susanah Hoffman) wastes no opportunity to chronicle and spread the community's secrets. The film covers many social issues, including homosexuality, adultery, and teen promiscuity.moreless
