Wilde is a 1997 biographical drama that follows the extraordinary life and tragic fall of famed playwright and wit Oscar Wilde. Through the success of his comedies and the popularity of his speaking engagements, Oscar Wilde (Stephen Fry) becomes part of London society. Although married to Constance (Jennifer Ehle), Wilde begins a romance relationship with Robbie Ross (Michael Sheen). Although the relationship does not last, Ross helps him accept his homosexuality. Eventually Wilde falls deeply in love with Lord Alfred Douglas (Jude Law), the reckless son of the powerful Marquess of Queensberry (Tom Wilkinson). The Marquess blames Wilde for corrupting his son and files a legal action against the popular writer. Wilde eloquently fights for his rights in court, but the Victorian society around him will not accept a "sodomite" within their circles. Wilde gets sent to prison and Douglas turns his back on Wilde in favor of winning his father's approval. The film follows Wilde from the heights of worldwide fame to the degradation of prison.moreless
