Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? is a Frank Tashlin directed comedy released in 1957. Rockwell P. Hunter (Tony Randall) is a middling writer for a television advertising agency. With the company set to lose its biggest account, Stay-Put Lipstick, Rockwell gets an idea. Why not sign Hollywood's biggest actress Rita Marlowe (Jayne Mansfield) to Stay-Put? Rita agrees to this, provided Rockwell does her a personal favor. He must pose as her boyfriend, in order to make her real boyfriend, Bobo Branigansky (Mickey Hargitay), jealous. These actions almost immediately backfire as Bobo runs to the press, and Rockwell finds himself suddenly famous. As Rockwell increasingly comes into wealth, women, and other rewards of success, he finds that this life is not what he bargained for. Shortly after becoming president of the company, and in a relationship with Rita that he really does not care for, he produces a show for Stay-Put Lipstick starring Rita. At this show Rita reunites with an old love, and Rockwell must come to terms with his actions and make a choice. This classic spin on Hollywood advertising netted Tony Randall his first Golden Globe nomination and was selected for preservation in the United States Film Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".moreless
