Movie: William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream

Movie Summary

William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream is a 1999 film adaptation of Shakespeare's 1590s play of the same name. When Hermia (Anna Friel) is ordered by her father to marry Demetrius (Christian Bale), she leaves her home to elope with Lysander (Dominic West). Helena (Calista Flockhart), who is in love with Demetrius, alerts him of Hermia's actions and the two follow the young lovers into the forest. The four end up in a part of the forest ruled by King Oberon (Rupert Everett) and Queen Titania (Michelle Pfeiffer), warring deities who decide to play with the mortals during their visit. With the help of Puck (Stanley Tucci), Oberon uses a magical portion to make both men fall in love with Helena and Titania fall in love with a weaver, Nick Bottom (Kevin Kline). Will these deities and morals be able to sort of their complicated love affairs, or are they doomed to being under Oberon's spell forever? This adaptation was written and directed by Michael Hoffman and produced by Regency Enterprises.moreless
