Willie Smith: Willie the Lion is the biography film which tells the life story of William Smith, the legendary jazz pianist who was better known as The Lion. Born in Goshen, New York, Willie had a tough upbringing, dealing with gangs, missing fathers, and more. At six years old he found his mother's old organ, and he fell in love. He wanted a piano, but money as tight. Willie got a job at a shoe store shining shoes to save up, and he finally won a grand piano in a newspaper contest. He became a talented pianist and composer, working the Harlem clubs and pioneering the new, sophisticated piano style later known as Harlem Stride. He composed over 100 songs, toured the country, and was an inventive force in the jazz community, and now you can see his whole story.
