Winning is a 1969 film directed by James Goldstone and stars Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward. The story revolves around the ambitious racecar driver, Frank Capua (Newman) and his dream of winning the Indianapolis 500. To Frank, there is no greater achievement than winning this respected race. However, his blind ambition drives a wedge between himself and his wife Elora (Woodward). This distance pushes Elora to seek comfort in the arms of another man named Luther (Robert Wagner). Unfortunately, Luther is also Frank's main competitor on the track which only serves to heighten tensions. Frank is now faced with the challenge of saving his marriage and winning the ultimate race. Newman and Woodward, who were a real life couple, provide unique onscreen chemistry and the film also features several famous racecar drivers of the time. Newman's training for this role led to his passion for competitive sports car racing which he participated in for the rest of his life.
