Wise Blood is a 1979 "Southern Gothic" film centered around a man so embittered by a troubled past, he renounces his faith in God and the Christian Church. The film is based on a 1957 book by Flannery O'Connor of the same title. Benedict and Michael Fitzgerald adapted the novel to screen which John Huston, "cinema's Ernest Hemingway" directed. Hazel Motes (Brad Dourif) is more than a little disillusioned in his Christian faith when he returns from the Vietnam War to his small hometown in Georgia. An angry, now uninhibited man, he decides to erect a Church Without Christ smack in the middle of town. Although the town is supremely religious, several oddballs - Enoch Emory (Dan Shor), Sabbath Lily (Amy Wright), Hoover Shoates (Ned Beatty) - flock toward Hazel and his new movement. Each character in this film is well developed - you will instantly be drawn in by each person's oddities. You will not be let down watching Wise Blood.moreless
