Witch Hunt dissects the prosecution of dozens of mothers and fathers in Bakersfield, California, following the election of get-tough prosecutor Ed Jagels. First elected in 1983, Jagels made a name for himself with a spectacular string of convictions for child molestation. Mothers and fathers that appeared to be happy couples were charged with abusing their children and forcing them to participate in sex parties. He won strong sentences against the defendants, including 200 years each for Scott and Brenda Kniffen, 300 years for Rick and Marcella Pitts and 40 years for John Stoll. The only problem was many of the accused were innocent of the crime. They spent years in prison before they were exonerated. The children that were star witnesses at the trial tell of being coerced and intimidated by Jagels and social workers when they were only five or six years old. It was only when Jagels began prosecuting residents for satanic rituals that the state stepped in and launched the investigation that exonerated many of those convicted for molestation. Sean Penn narrates the 2008 documentary.moreless
