Witchfinder General is a 1968 horror film directed by Michael Reeves that stars the legendary Vincent Price. The film is set in 17th century England during the battle for control between the Royalists and the Parliamentary party. Vincent Price plays the corrupt government official Matthew Hopkins. Hopkins claims he is able to discover witches. Hopkins travels around, offering his witch persecuting services to superstitious and naive locals. Along with his sadistic henchman John Stearne, Hopkins goes from city to city forcing confessions from accused witches in order to get money and sexual favors for when he declares them innocent. However when Hopkin persecutes a priest (played by Rupert Davies), he angers Richard Marshall, who is engaged to the priest's niece. So Marshall pursues Hopkins and Stearne, even to the point of risking treason by leaving his military duties behind. Vincent Price considered the role of Hopkins to have been the greatest in his whole career.
