Withnail and I is a 1987 comedy-drama, directed and written by Bruce Robinson. The film is set in London, England, where two unemployed and unemployable actors, Withnail (Richard E. Grant) and Marwood (Paul McGann), are sick of their uneventful lives. Even their alcohol and drug-infused lifestyles are not enough to make the damp, gray London life bearable. So they decide to pack up and leave their Camden flat and all its squalor for the cottage that Withnail’s uncle, Monty (Richard Griffiths), owns on the idyllic English countryside. It turns out not to be that great, though, when the weather refuses to cooperate and it turns out that, while the cottage is full of country charm, it lacks food. And then, as if matters were not bad enough, Uncle Monty makes an unexpected visit and seems a bit too attached to Marwood. Will they, and their friendship, survive their little sojourn in the country? Withnail and I won an Evening Standard British Film Award.moreless
