Wolf Larsen, directed by Harmon Jones, is a film adaptation of The Sea-Wolf, a classic novel written by Jack London. The film follows Humphrey Van Weyden (Peter Graves), an intellectual who is forced to face a rougher side of life when his ferry sinks off the coast of San Francisco. Van Weyden is rescued by Wolf Larsen (Barry Sullivan), the hardened captain of The Ghost, a seal-hunting schooner. Larsen has little regard for human life and subscribes to a hedonistic philosophy that the only goal in life is to survive and indulge in whatever pleasures can be had. The captain is a brutal leader, but also has an intellectual side and finds a companion worthy of intelligent discourse in Van Weyden. He takes Van Weyden on as a sailor and teaches him to survive aboard the schooner. Through a series of dangerous adventurers, Van Weyden learns to live and love on the rough seas.
