Working is a musical adaptation of a book by sociologist Studs Terkel about the lives of average working individuals. Originally a Broadway stage production adapted by Stephen Schwartz, Working was converted into an American Playhouse performance with Terkel himself bookending the play through a series of narrations and co-director Schwartz providing the majority of music and songs. Working is an examination of the working class, originally based upon a series of interviews with construction workers, parking attendants, waitresses, firemen, secretaries, cleaners, and all manner of overlooked blue-collar workers. The play examines the nature of what motivates and inspires these myriad workers day in and day out, with a lamentation for what hopes and dreams are sacrificed along the way. Working features fantastic and inspirational performances by Eileen Brennan, Patti Labelle, Barry Bostwick, Rita Moreno, James Taylor and many others. With the all-encompassing theme "Everyone has a Story," Working is an uncommon musical exploration of everyday lives and the regular people who make society function.moreless
