Written on the Wind is a lush 1956 melodrama that follows the dark undercurrents and intersecting relationships between four Texans. Mitch Wayne (Rock Hudson) may have come from the wrong side of the tracks, but through hard work and the help of childhood friend, Kyle Hadley (Robert Stack), he has an important role as a geologist with Hadley Oil, Inc. When the two old friends take a business trip to New York, they meet lovely Lucy Moore (Lauren Bacall), an executive secretary at the firm they are visiting. Both men want to make an impression on her, but Lucy eventually falls for Kyle. Kyle surprises Mitch by retiring his partying playboy style and proposes to Lucy. He also stops his heavy drinking, but falls off the wagon when he discovers that he may not be able to give her children. Meanwhile, Kyle's sister, Marylee (Dorothy Malone in an Oscar-winning performance) has long had her eyes on Mitch and finds a way to blackmail him into her bed. When Lucy announces her pregnancy, both Kyle and Marylee suspect that Lucy and Mitch have become more than friends. Douglas Sirk directed this colorful melodrama of conflicting emotions and dangerous obsessions.moreless
