Movie Summary

Bryan Singer

All over the planet, unusual children are born with a mutation to their genetic code, this X-factor gives these mutants extraordinary powers, which unfortunately causes them to be feared and persecuted by humans. With the guidance of Professor Charles Xavier these mutants are schooled and trained to control and appreciate the abilities and strive for a world where humans and mutants can peacefully co-exist. The mutants are however being vilified by Senator Robert Kelly a staunch advocate of mutant internment. The situation brings fellow mutants and former friends Erik Lehnsherr, Magneto, and Professor Charles Xavier into opposition. While Xavier seeks to stop the hatred toward mutants peacefully, Magneto seeks to even things out with a machine that would speed up the mutation process in all humans, making everyone equal. The civil war between mutants has begun and the survival of the human race hangs in the balance.

  • 80

    Los Angeles Times Kenneth Turan

While X-Men doesn't take your breath away wire-to-wire the way "The Matrix" did, it's an accomplished piece of work with considerable pulp watchability to it.

    Variety Dennis Harvey

Plays like a so-so middle chapter of an epic series rather than a fitting kickoff.

  • 50

The New York Times A.O. Scott

Clumsy when it should be light on its feet, the movie takes itself even more seriously than the comic book and its fans do, which is a superheroic achievement.
