Movie Summary

Bryan Singer

Several months have passed since the X-Men have defeated and imprisoned their nemesis, Magneto. This conquest was a victory for the X-Men and all mutants. With Magneto locked up the mutants feel secure at Professor X's hidden Mutant Academy. This sense of security is tested when a mutant assassin, Nightcrawler, sneaks into the White House and attempts to murder the President. Almost immediately, anti-mutant actions are being planned and carried out by the military. The X-Men, including Wolverine, Rogue, Iceman and a few others find themselves under attack. Soon the X-Men realize their only chance at saving mutant-kind may be to form unlikely alliances with enemies.

  • 80

    Los Angeles Times Kenneth Turan

Brisk and involving with a streamlined forward propulsion, it's the kind of superhero movie we want if we have to have superhero movies at all.

About twice as good as the original...bigger and more ambitious in every respect, from its action and visceral qualities to its themes.

Mr. Singer and his collaborators grasp that comic books, for all their obligatory fights and explosions, are at bottom about their brave, troubled, impossibly muscled characters.

      • Wolverine: Who the hell is this?
Kurt: Kurt Wagner. But in the Munich circus I was known as "The Incredible Nightcrawler".

      • Storm: Can you teleport inside?
Kurt: No. I have to be able to see where I'm going otherwise I could end up inside a wall.

      • Magneto: What's your name?
        Pyro: John.
Magneto: What's your real name, John?
        Pyro: (manipulating a flame) Pyro.
Magneto: Quite a talent you have there, Pyro.
Pyro: I can only manipulate the fire. I can't create it.
Magneto: You are a god among insects. Never let anyone tell you different.

      • Charles: Eric, what have you done?
Magneto: I'm sorry, Charles. I couldn't help it.

        Magneto: [sighs] Everything.
Charles: (gas fills the room) Scott!
Magneto: You should have killed me when you had the chance!

      • Charles: Logan, my tolerance for your smoking in the mansion notwithstanding... continue smoking that in here and you'll spend the rest of your days under the belief that you are a six-year-old girl.
        Logan: You'd do that?
Charles: I'll have Jean braid your hair.
