XX/XY is a romantic dramatic film that focuses on the romantic entanglements of a strange and unconventional relationship between Coles (Mark Ruffalo), an animator, and two college roommates, cute and caring Sam (Maya Strange) and wildly reckless Thea (Kathleen Robertson). Alcohol and a lot of attraction lead the three into an awkward but fun night together, which eventually turns into an unusual friendship with Sam and Coles continuing in a relationship with Thea occasionally coming in to disrupt the normalcy. The relationship on all sides ends and the three part ways until eight years later, they find themselves together again. Each with their own successes and growths, Coles, Thea, and Sam find themselves looking at what went wrong in their old dynamic and contemplate disrupting their current lives for the memories of the past.
