Year of the Dog is a dark comedy drama focused on Peggy (Molly Shannon), a cheerful secretary who leads an unremarkable life as a good coworker and friend to all. Her sole purpose seems to revolve around her beloved beagle, Pencil. When Pencil ingests something toxic and dies, Peggy is devastated and tries to fill the huge emptiness in her life. She begins a relationship with neighbor Al (John C. Reilly), but begins to suspect that he might have been responsible for poisoning Pencil. As Peggy transforms into a vegan and animal rights activist and becomes more and more passionate for the cause, her life begins to spiral downward. She loses her job and has a mental health breakdown, bringing home all the condemned dogs from the local pound. After confirming her suspicions about Al, she attacks him and is forced to get counselling. Peggy finally sorts things out and is given the opportunity to return to her old job. She chooses to attend an animal rights protest instead, realizing that she has finally found purpose in life.
