Rating:

Your Friends and Neighbors is a dark 1998 ensemble comedy about the sexual entanglements among a set of shallow yuppie friends. Jerry (Ben Stiller) and Terri (Catherine Keener) have a long-term but unsatisfying relationship that neither has the energy to leave. Terri has a lesbian relationship on the side with Cheri (Nastassja Kinski). Jerry begins an affair with Mary (Amy Brenneman), who is married to Barry (Aaron Eckhart), who prefers his self-love to his relations with his wife. Then, there's the single Cary (Jason Patric), who finds his pleasure with plenty of them. As these couples intersect and intertwine, they discuss their dissatisfying relationships, sexual frustrations and dour outlook on finding anything better. By using characters with similar sounding names and a nameless town, the unnamed town, writer and director Neil LaBute presents a cynical worldview of successful people with nice clothes, good neighborhoods and trendy restaurants without much feeling for anyone but themselves.

It once again confuses a kind of juvenile titillation with insight and treats the ability to make audiences squirm as a pinnacle of film art.
