Zabriskie Point is about 1960s America, filmed partially on location at Zabriskie Point, in Death Valley, California. Released in 1970, the director, Michelangelo Antonioni, wanted to create a true portrait of the times. The film's stark cinematography earned critical praise. Antonioni cast 2 unknown actors as leads, Mark (Mark Frechette) is a rebel, involved in riots, and sit-ins, frequently in trouble with the law, and wanted by the police for allegedly killing an officer during a recent riot. Daira (Daria Halprin) is an anthropology student, and a pot-smoking secretary to a land developer. Mark and Daria meet after Mark steals a small plane and is driving it through the desert, at the same time Daria is driving her car through the desert, scouting out a site for her boss. They connect and spend the afternoon in Death Valley making love. Mark and Daria leave the desert, not knowing that their story is about to end tragically.
