Movie Summary

Director:
Jon Favreau
Released:
2005
Rating:
PG

Zathura is based on the best-selling book written by Chris Van Allsburg, who is responsible for other children's hits like The Polar Express and Jumanji. This 2005 film, directed by Jon Favreau, tells the story of Walter (Josh Hutcherson) and Danny Budwing (Jonah Bobo), two brothers who can barely stand each other. One boring afternoon, they find an old board game named Zathura in their basement and, since they have nothing else to do, they decide to play. The brothers discover this is no ordinary game; their whole house is launched into outer space as soon as they roll the dice. With the help of their sister Lisa (Kristen Stewart) and an astronaut (Dax Shepard) who joins them in their fantastic journey, the Budwing brothers will have to fight robots, aliens and meteor storms. The only way to come back from their outer space adventure is to find a way to finish the game.

Metacritic Score

  • 70

The New York Times Stephen Holden

In the enchanted limbo between waking and sleeping, Zathura feels both real and unreal, like a dream you could shake off at any moment.

  • 70

    Variety Justin Chang

Its unwieldy title notwithstanding, Zathura: A Space Adventure is arguably the best adaptation of a Chris Van Allsburg book to date.

  • 60

    Los Angeles Times Kevin Crust

The movie has a lot of the elements that might make it thrilling and it's visually arresting, but it's missing the emotional connection necessary to make it interesting.
