Zatoichi: The Blind Swordsman: Zatoichi's Pilgrimage is one film in a series of action movies that take place during the Edo period in Japan that occurred between 1603 and 1868. This specific film is one of the early films of the series, as it was released in 1966 and the series ran from 1962 until 1989. Zatoichi (Shintaro Katsu) is the main character of the film and is a blind masseur and sword master. He is somewhat of a Robin Hood, as he protects the innocent countryside residents from the terrorist groups known as yakuza gangs. He also looks to fight general injustice to protect those who cannot protect themselves from danger. At this point in his life, Zatoichi is feeling guilty about his past transgressions. In order to cleanse himself of his sins, Zatoichi travels to the coast to beg the gods to forgive him of everything he has done wrong. However, his trip is interrupted. A group of bandits come onto the scene and get in the way of Zatoichi's catharsis.
