Zero Effect is a 1998 comedic mystery directed by Jake Kasdan. In the film, Daryl (Bill Pullman) is an arrogant detective who feels he is the best detective in the world and no one else measures up to his high standards. He tends not to get emotionally invested in anyone or anything. His associate, Steve Arlo (Ben Stiller), does not care for Daryl very much but works with him anyway. The duo take the case of Gregory Stark (Ryan O'Neal) who claims he is missing keys and being blackmailed. He wants the keys found and the blackmail ended, but he will not share any other details of the case. Daryl and Steve cannot decide if Gregory is hiding something or if the lack of details is simply because he really does not know why someone would do this to him. Will Daryl's detective skills be compromised when he does something he has never done before, or will he learn that he can have a personal life and a professional life?
