Zoe is a 2001 drama written and directed by Deborah Attoinese that presents a story of spiritual enlightenment and old rituals of the South Western desert. Zoe (Vanessa Zima) is a girl who seeks to escape from Detroit with its superficial life and find her Native American roots in the West. Together with her two restless friends, Sarah (Stephi Lineburg) and Ally (Victoria Davis), they abandon school and steal a car that will take them to New Mexico. They meet Cecilia (Jenny Seagrove), a British woman who also travels West to bury the ashes of her mother in the sacred desert. Their common interest in the Native American culture brings Zoe and Cecilia into a close spiritual relationship. Cecilia is surprised to find her mother's lover, Red Shirt (Gordon Tootoosis), and her old cabin. During her quest to find enlightenment in the local traditions, Zoe becomes lost, but is found through the mystical powers of the Cherokee tribe. Zoe and Cecilia are both on the path of redefining their identities and seeking peace for their troubled minds.
