Murder City is yet another police drama with a mismatched duo at its heart. The pair solve challenging homicide cases with very different but critical investigation techniques.

The main characters are your usual detectives in a murder unit trying to solve difficult crimes. There is all the usual blood and gore but it is tempered with a unique brand of humourous lines and quips which is unique is this type of television show. hide « show »

The best part of this series is the witty dialogue that the writers have given the players.
There is the typical formula of the victim, the crime, the evidence and the result or "clear up" as they call it in this series.
Sprinkled throughout are these absolutely brilliant one liners, which are shared equally amongst all the characters so as not make one of them the unit clown.
The lines are perfectly crafted, timed and delivered to make them both entertaining and believable because we must all realize that those who work in this field are not always serious all the time. They couldn't be or they would likely crack up in no time.
In addition to the excellent dialogue there is the actual stories/crimes. The writers have managed to take the act of murder and make it new and interesting. Each case was unique and well constructed. They had many twists and turns which kept one guessing right up until the end and I was often surprized by the conclusion.
This combination of humour, wit and gritty crime drama makes for a well spent 90 minutes of entertainment.
My only complaint was that there were several "personal" story lines which were introduced but never elaborated on or carried through to the next episode. One was left hanging wondering about what or who broke Luke's heart so that he was only supposed to be able to have superficial realtionships without allowing someone close to him. As well there was Susan's husbands supposed infidelity. We were only let in on this during the last moments of one show, but it was never followed up or continued in the remaining shows.
My question is, why bother showing us these personal aspects of the characters if you are not intending to elaborate on them later or use them as part of a future story line.
Overall this is time well spent and I certainly think this could have made it last for several more years.

English Acting and Production Values at Their Very Best hide « show »

Susan (my wife) and I are fortunate enough to receive Murder City on Showtime here in Canada. Next to Gray's Anatomy, this is our favourite show. The acting is superb--an ensemble cast that works well together. Indeed we have a series of stock characters: the pompous twit; the disenchanted loner; etc. But the writing is so well drawn that we get to see the characters grow together, and not always as we expect. Why anyone would watch US television, with very rare exceptions, when they have the opportunity to immerse themselves in a series that is this good is beyond me.
Please support this cast and company. The idea that Murder City might not be there one day is truly depressing.
