Murder, She Wrote: Episode Trivia
TRIVIA GUIDE:
- Jessica celebrates the release of her first novel, The Corpse Danced at Midnight, published by Coventry House in New York. In one week, it went from being number eight on The New York Times Best Sellers list to number two. Jessica also experienced her first lawsuit when Agnes Peabody attempted to sue her, claiming that the novel was really her creation.
- The sign at the beginning of the episode states that Cabot Cove, Maine, has a population of 3650.
- Grady Fletcher is Jessica's nephew via her marriage to his uncle Frank. He helped Jessica launch her career by sending her manuscript to his girlfriend, Kit Donovan. This episode features Grady's first arrest, for suspicion of murder. Both Grady and Jessica wear glasses when necessary, although Grady seems more near-sighted than far-sighted in this episode, wearing his glasses for driving purposes.
- This episode features the introduction of Cabot Cove citizens Sheriff Amos Tupper and Captain Ethan Cragg. Cragg has been friends with Jessica for many years, whereas Tupper seems to barely tolerate her, resenting her interference in a police investigation. This is also the first mention of the never-seen Letitia, the phone operator in Cabot Cove.
- Frank Fletcher smoked a pipe that, according to Stephen Earl, was 'a fine-looking meerschaum'. Meerschaum is a soft, white mineral that is most frequently used to make pipes.
- Stephen Earl picks up a recent book of Jessica's from the counter entitled Dirge for a Dead Dachshund. The book was in pre-publication at the time, and was not yet released for publication. Maggie Earl refers to having read Jessica's 'latest book', indicating that Dirge for a Dead Dachshund is at least her third book. Cragg also makes mention to Amos 'reading too many of Jessica's books' indicating, again, that Dirge for a Dead Dachshund was not her second work.
- Victoria Brandon is Jessica's niece, and is engaged to Howard Griffin. Howard has held a series of jobs throughout the year, including selling insurance, but his goal has always been to act.
- Victoria reveals that Jessica has had six best-selling mystery novels on The New York Times Best Seller list in order to get her and Jessica into Al Drake's club. Jessica's later conversation with Patterson reveals that Jessica has also had one movie sale.
- Jessica reveals, in a conversation with Mike Hernandez, that the 'B' in J.B. Fletcher stands for Beatrice.
- Capt. Ethan Cragg is mentioned but not seen in this episode as Jessica calls home to tell him that she will be staying on the Estate a little bit longer.
- Jessica's cousin Abby Benton Freestone, a Capricorn, is introduced during this episode as a horse trainer working on the Langley Estate.
- Jessica speaks Chinese, which is revealed at the airport as she converses with two Chinese nuns.
- Jessica's trip to Seattle is the first time she has been asked to lecture at a university. The subject of her first lecture is her first novel, The Corpse Danced at Midnight.
- Jessica, Frank and Edmund all attended university together. Frank and Edmund were both interesting in Jessica, and thre three spent many Saturday nights together in the basement of the Kappa Gamma Chi house. Edmund and Frank both used to joke that Jessica chose the wrong man.
- The arcade game Ethan is playing in the grocery is 'Spy Hunter' by Bally Midway.
- At the beginning of the episode, Jessica is seen riding her bicycle past a sign that reads: CABOT COVE POP. 3560.
- Jessica does not have a driver's licence, and walks or bikes anywhere she needs to go in Cabot Cove. She also jogs every single morning.
- This episode features the introduction of Cabot Cove citizens Cora McIntyre, who works at the local grocery (McIntyre's), Daniel O'Brien, his nephew Tony Holiday, and their close family friend, Katie Simmons. Daniel has lived in Cabot Cove for six years, and is still considered a stranger by many of the long-time residents, because he wasn't born there. This is the second mention of the never-seen Letitia, the phone operator of Cabot Cove.
- Carol Donovan is another of Jessica's many nieces (it is not clarified whether she's Macgill or the Fletcher side). She is married to Bert, and they share children Billy and Cindy.
- New Englanders refer to being from Maine as being from 'down east' -- this fact is revealed when Jessica asks a young man if he is from 'down east' and he responds 'No, I'm from Maine', to which both Ethan and Jessica comment that it means he is not from the area as anyone from Maine would have agreed that they were from 'down east'.
- Introduced in this episode is Cabot Cove resident Leo Peterson (formerly known as Leonid Petrovich), who defected from Russia during World War II. This is also the third time Jessica speaks with the unseen and unheard telephone operator Letitia.

- When Jessica Fletcher goes to Harry McGraw office for the first time, she leaves behind her files on the desk. When leaving, she only takes the detectives notes with her, not her files.
- When Jessica turns off the water for her bath she finds a button she's missing on the bottom of the tub. She reaches her left arm into the water to pick it up. Someone is at the door and when Jessica goes to answer it she dryes her right arm with a towel, not her left.
