- The immortal Irene Ryan (1902-73) would soon start playing the role that she is best remembered for, that of Granny Moses in the hit series "The Beverly Hillbillies" (1962-71). After almost ten years in the role, she headed back to Broadway with a Tony-nominated performance in "Pippin." In April 1973, Ryan suffered a stroke and died soon after at the age of 70. Her officially listed cause of death is a brain tumour. Although she is gone, the Irene Ryan Trust fund lives on, donating scholarships to promising young theater arts students. edit »
