Episode Summary

Shinji Ikari is summoned to NERV by his cold father, Gendô Ikari, who tells him he has a use for him. At the same time, a giant being known as an "Angel" also arrives in New Tokyo-3, which is met by the ineffectual offense of the U.N. Shinji must pilot the equally giant Evangelion Unit-01, but at what cost?

    fast paced... hide show

the first episode which is traditionally the most influental and the hook was extremely fast paced with shinju in the middle of the crossfire between nerv and the angel the episode proves no conventional means like bombs will hurt the angels only by the means of evangalions by gendo ikaris guess so shinji is forced to make a decision to pilot the evangalion or let a injured rei ayanami pilot the eva so shinji reluctantly agrees to pilot it but still it is obvious he has some qualms with his father because he is yelling at him through it and asking why did he leave him and whatnot

I wanted cartoons.. I got anime with cyborgs, humor, love, and suspense. What will happen next? I'll find out after reviewing this. hide show

Before watching the next episode, I am going to review this episode. I was received this box set of DVDs without much knowledge of this anime series other than it's a futuristic anime series that probably contain words that only Scientists or a few scientists would know. But, I gladly decided to accept this and watch the first episode. I'm gladly to say that this episode made me quite glad that I watched this.

This episode contained a lot of suspense, and that's what makes me want more. I hope that future episodes will have suspense because this episode was just very interesting and exciting. Here's a spoiler, Shinji, a person without any training to pilot anything, now has to pilot some robot against Angel. Right after he meets his father for the first time in three years I believe, he is commanded by him to pilot Evangelion Unit-01. What is going to happen next? I'll find out.

I recommend this episode for a great start of the series, of course. I thought this made a great first impression and was a great start for the popular series. This totally dragged me in to the series.

Neon Genesis Evangelion is a show about 3 teenagers who must pilot bio-mechanecal mechs. Are they mech's? you'll find out later in the seris. Anyways, the episode start's off with a boy named Shinji Ikari who really doesent like him self, really.. And his dad requests him to come to the secreat operations base nerve, who carries these code named mechs evas, short for Evangelion. And that's all Ill tell you about the story.

The action is intense and very exciting like an adrenilen rush. Its also bloody gorey, what's there to say this episode is great has lot's of blood and destruction. Exactly what this seris is about. the only downfall is that, it really just sets you up for episode 2 wich is a flashback of all what happended the night before.

This episode is awesome. and every noobie to the seris should watch it.

Good first impression of the series! hide show

I found this episode to be a great start to this great anime. We start off by watching a city under water, picturing the state the world is in in the year 2015 AD. It gives you a good first impression. So does the Angel attack. Ad then there was a N2 Bomb. I really like those bombs.
Later, Shinji is taken to NERV to meet his father, who wants him to pilot the giant EVA Unit 01 to stop the Angel, who wasn't stopped by the attack by the nuclear-like N2 bomb. Well, I found his father way to harsh, and I grew a dislike for him at the first moment. I just didn't like him that much. But it didn't stop me from liking the series. At all.
And when Shinji didn't want to do it, and they brought in the injured Rei to pilot it... I felt sad. And then Eva saved Shinji, and then he decided to pilot the Eva because Rei was so injured. So, he piloted it up, and then the episode ended in a brilliant cliffhanger.
I liked this episode and how it gave a good first impression of the show. 8.8/10

    10 Perfect

Giant organic cyborgs, explosions, and hundreds of tons of blood... what more could you want? Maybe some intense graphic disembowelment of human characters but its not that kind of anime. hide show

The animation is seemless and breath taking the artistic view of scenes is well done, also the symbolism that takes place is very well thought out and exicuted. Unfortunetly the series blows it fight scene 'load' early on and doesn't get the great dramatic combat again until the fight scene with the 13th angel. The thing I like the most about this series is the fact that it rarelly breaks from the Manga story line. (with the exception of a extra episode and the fact that toji ends up living and some extra or left out tid bits)

  • Ritsuko claims that it took seven months for Rei Ayanami to sync with her Evangelion Unit-00. Shinji syncs with his Evangelion Unit-01in two minutes. []
  • Japanese Title: 「使徒、襲来」 ("Shito, Shūrai") - "Angel Attack"

The word Shito does not actually mean angel. Rather, it means apostle or disciple. []
  • The Third Angel Sachiel

The first Angel said to have attacked in 15 years since the Second Impact. In Episode Fourteen "Seele, Throne of Souls," it is revealed that its name is the same as the angel "Sachiel" that appears in the "Bible" (later Angels are also named in the same episode). "Sachiel" is an angel of water, and similarly, the Third Angel was capable of acting under water. Angels come in various shapes, but of them, this one has a shape close to a human and even has a part towards the top of its body that looks suggestively like a human "face."

Of particular note among its abilities is the AT field. This is an ability that can be seen across all Angels, and it is an absolute defensive wall that can render all existing weapons ineffective. It is so powerful that it repelled every last weapon the U.N. military used on it and left them with no other means to fight it. Even their trump card, the N2 mine, was reduced in effectiveness.

It can also be surmised that it did not have any long-range attack methods when it first appeared, but it behaved singularly when it stopped a missile with the palm of its hand in tits fight with the U.N. military, and after that, it had acquired similar attack capabilities. This Angel did no have any knowledge of flying weapons, but through the experience of being attacked in this fashion, it had changed its own body in just a short amount of time. From this event, it becomes clear that Angels have the ability to learn and to amplify their own functionality.

In addition, it has the ability to repair itself, and it is capable of repairing or rebuilding its damaged parts. When its "face-like thing" as damaged from the U.N. military's attacks, it regenerated a new one of the same exact thing.

The weapons it is equipped with are spear-shaped weapons sheathed in its forearms and the aforementioned invisible long-range attacks. It is also capable of flying, through only for short distances. In the initial fight, it self-destructs at the end of its fight with Unit-01 but fails to destroy Unit-01. More information. []

  • Maya: Launch path clear. All systems green.
    Ritsuko: Evangelion... ready for launch.
Misato: Understood. (to Gendō) Can we really do this?
Gendō: Of course. Unless we defeat the Angels, we have no future.
Kōzō: Ikari, are you absolutely certain?
    (Ikari smiles to himself)
    Misato: EVA launch! []

  • Neon Genesis Evangelion is the first TV series that GAINAX and Hideaki Anno of Wings of Honneamise, Aim for the Top!, and Nadia: The Secret Blue Water fame had announced in 5 years. The best members of GAINAX at the time came together for Episodes One and Two. They made some episodes that definitely lived up to the expectation of fans.

Episode One shows Shinji Ikari coming to New Tokyo-3 up to him getting aboard the artificial human Evangelion Unit-01 after some complications and standing in front of the Angel. The overwhelmingly realistic battle between the U.N. military and the Angel, the fascinating character of Misato Katsuragi, who is both cool and candid, the launch scene that had mecha fans roaring, and the special effects used for things like the painstakingly detailed monitor screen provide for a lot to see. With the distinctive turns of phrases in the diajogue, it is overflowing with the eccentricity unique to Evangelion, and yet, it also has the strong flavor of the orthodox school of robot and hero stories.

One of the captivating points of Evangelion is that it presents numerous mysteries during the show. At the beginning, we are shown a scene with a group of high-rises sunk into the ocean, and this is due to the unprecedented catastrophic calamity called the Second Impact, but it is not discussed in the show until Epiosde Three. In addition, the true idenitiy of the Angels and the L.C.L. are not revealed until the end of the series.

Reunited with Shinji for the first time in 3 years, the executive commander of NERV, Gendō Ikari, orders him to get on the Eva and out into the field on the spot. And faced with Eva Unit-00 and Rei Ayanami, he repeats over and over, "I musn't run away," as if he is trying to convice himself of it. "Communicating with others" is a vital theme of Evangelion and depicting how Shinji interacts with those around him is part of the story of Evangelion. The revealing of why Gendo treats Shinji so coldly is left to Episode Twenty-Six, "My Purest Heart for You," which was released theatrically.

When Shinji comes to New Tokyo-3, he sees a girl that seems to be Rei Ayanami for just an anstant. Considering how she is injured and wrapped up in bandages, when he later meets her in NERV Headquarters, the natural assumption would be to think that this was a phantom vision. But in Episode Twenty-Six, "My Purest Heart for You," a different possibility is suggested. The girl that appeared for just one cut in this scene may be the Rei Ayanami who is "the existence that gazes upon man." []
