Episode Summary

The three Children take time off at a NERV pool, where Asuka teaches Shinji about thermal expansion. Inside the volcano Mt. Asama, the eighth Angel is discovered in its larval form. Eva-02, outfitted with Type-D armor, is sent deep inside the magma to retrieve it before the Angel can hatch.

    Cool! hide show

I liked this episode. Well, what should I say? Um, yeah, it was funny how Asuka reacted to having to wear an inflated plug suit. She was totally funny! Yeah, and she didn't want it. Then Rei decided to take the mission. Asuka then quickly said that Rei should not lay her hands on her Unit. I personally think that was just a cover for her wanting to show off for Shinji; I believe she actually likes him. Well, so she decided to take the mission. And, well, the mission was okay. I kinda liked how she figured that she had to use that thermal expansion stuff to kill the Angel. Which she by the way explained to Shinji earlier, and asking if it would work on her breasts (which got me laughing). And after then she seemingly was heading to her death; falling downwards, but then Shinji came and saved her. They do like each other.
And when they were at the hot springs at the end... it really cracked me up... especially Shinji's comment.
    A really cool episode! 8.8/10

    Meh. hide show

I didn't understand this episode very well. for one thing, why did the infant angel stay the same size and suddenly blow up at the end? Aside from that, there wasn't enough fighting. just asuka running around in a fat suit in her eva in a fat suit. Another thing- why was shinji there? I think it was just to make it more dramatic. And the ending scene. Kind of an odd turn for the NGE chicks. But it was probably a setup for the thermal expansion joke.

I hoped for too much. hide show

NERV discovered an Angel within a local volcano that was still in its early stages. This was a perfect time for the scientists to research and study on the Angels, which made this a high priority mission. Asuka was sent in the volcano to retrieve it before it fully matured, but it was much too late, and in a matter of seconds, it turned into another devastating monster. While Asuka was successful in defeating the Angel, her cord that connected her and the rest of the world was destroyed during the heat of battle. Though the one to rescue her was Shinji and his EVA 01.

This is one of my least favourite episodes. First off, I found it extremely difficult to focus on what was going on with all the magma in the way. Evangelion's episodes are driven by either its awesome fighting and tactical scenes, or its character. In here, neither have really been present. There was a battle, but it was so damn difficult to follow what exactly was going on, it made this a chore to watch.

  • The close up sequence of Misato standing over the NERV operator's shoulder when she says the lines "Start analysis!" during the exploration of the volcano and "Cage status!" when the Angel hatches will be recycled for use in the episodes Rei III/Tears and The Beginning And The End/"Knockin' on Heaven's Door." (Where she says "What's going on?!" just before Rei appears in Lilith's chamber.) []
  • If you freeze frame this episode you can read that the First Impact was a collision between the Earth and a Near-Earth Object which drove a portion of the Earth's mantle into space, creating the moon. Many fans erroneously believe it was the K-T event or the Great Flood. []
  • Japanese Title: 「マグマダイバー 」- "Magma Diver" []
  • The Eight Angel is called Sandalphon, Angel of Embryos. The name is fitting because the Angel is in an embryonic state when found. More information. []
  • (Asuka is trying to help Shinji do his physics homework dealing with thermal expansion)
Asuka: Look, if I were to warm up my breasts with my hands, do you think they'd grow bigger or smaller?
Shinji: (flustered) I don't know?! I don't think about things like that!
Asuka: (in a disappointed voice) Such a boring little boy... (sighs) []
  • Asuka: (as she goes into magma) Look Shinji, a perfect scissor dive. []
