What Are Your 10 Favorite Shows of 2014 (So Far)?

It's June! And that means it's time to start thinking about the best shows of the year. (Heck, I'm already thinking about the best shows of 2056—NCIS: Jupiter is actually quite good!)

Earlier this week, Time's James Poniewozik kicked off the discussion with a list of his 10 favorite shows from 2014 (so far), and we've decided to play along by answering his question of "What are yours?" and extending the same query to you.

To get things going, Jen and I have compiled quick lists of our 10 favorite shows of the first half of 2014. (Kaitlin is currently on assignment doing extensive research on what Taylor Kitsch smells like in real life at the ATX Television festival, but if she manages to somehow avoid Death by Riggins... yes, that is definitely a thing... we might eventually add her list, too.)

There weren't too many rules, though I limited my entries to shows that started their current seasons in 2014; Jen took a broader approach and considered anything that's aired this year, in full or in part. Share your own list in the comments!

It had been a busy 2014 so there is only one show I have watched all episodes of this year and it is Fargo.
Started a few other shows, but lost interest fairly quickly.

I am desperately missing some good sci-fi that includes actual spaceships.

Have you tried 'The 100'? It's on the CW but is getting great reviews (check them out on here), has been renewed for a second season ... and has spaceships (well, a space -ark thingie!)

Thanks for the suggestion, I will put it on my list. However considering how behind I am (I still have to finish Fringe, that´s how bad it is..) it may take a while before I check it out.

"Alright, what shows do YOU think are the 10 best of 2014 so far?"

There's no such word as alright. It is a (common) misspelling of "all right." A real writer would know that. Next step is to use "there" for "their."

'Shameless'

'Game of Thrones'

'Orphan Black'

'The Americans'

'Banshee'

'Veep'

'Louie'

'AHS: Coven' If only for no Dylan McDermott at all. That ..... and Stevie Nicks was in it.

'Mad Men' Its been a while but that 1st half of final season everything worked very well and everyone was at top of their game.

'DaVinci's Demons' - Like 'Arrow' tightened up problems in story telling in its Second Season and Tom Riley really makes this one of the most watchable, enjoyable programs airing.

''Honorable Mention: 'Arrow', 'Salem', 'Penny Dreadful', 'The 100', 'Bates Motel' and 'Legit' which dumb people canceled after putting it on new channel with ZERO publicity. Best ensemble of actors in any comedy on television.

I really had to sit and think. It's so difficult to choose b/c some of my faves, even thought they're returning, haven't technically aired this year yet. So bearing that in mind...

  • The Vampire Diaries
  • Lost Girl
  • Orange is the New Black
  • In the Flesh
  • Supernatural
  • Teen Wolf
  • Orphan Black
  • American Horror Story
  • Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
  • The Returned

I think I did it wrong. I thought it was simply shows that had aired this year so far, not necessarily ones that started new seasons within the year. If that's the case, I would have to rethink the whole thing. I may have to revisit this at some point. But I'm done for now.

Should I watch The Americans? Both Tim amd Jen have it in their top 10 and many others do as well.

If that doesn't tell you that the answer is "yes", then what good will an actual "yes" do? Are you concerned about something specific? Does it seem to similar to something you didn't like?

It's kind of slow, but if you like character-driven slow-building thrillers, then yes, you should watch it.
