12 Shows That Should Be on Your Radar in 2016

If you're like us, you are still writing "2015" on your parole check-in forms because you just can't believe it's already 2016. But with a new calendar comes a new, mostly arbitrary cut-off point to say, "Hey, here is a segment of time to create a TV-related feature around!"

Yes, we already told you what to keep an eye out for this midseason with our Most Anticipated New Shows of Midseason 2016, but why not look even further into the future and get you excited for the next 11-and-a-half months? Below we've put together a list of shows that we're excited for in 2016, whether they're crucial new seasons of returning shows or new series that should leave a big mark on our eyeballs when (and if) they arrive later this year.

Marvel's Luke Cage
 – Series Premiere (Netflix)

Hey, Netflix is two for two with its Marvel series, so keep 'em coming, we say. Luke Cage has the advantage of giving a show to a character we're already familiar with, and the jacked-up dude with impenetrable skin was a highlight of Marvel's Jessica Jones. The series will also give us an idea of how Netflix and the Marvel Cinematic Universe will handle three simultaneous superhero shows taking place in the same city. Filming is already under way, so we think this could fit in between second seasons of Marvel's Daredevil and Marvel's Jessica Jones (which has yet to be announced).

Better Call Saul – Season 2 (AMC)

Season 1 surprised most viewers as it exceeded expectations for what was dismissed as just a Breaking Bad prequel. But suck it, people with lowered expectations, because Better Call Saul was one of 2015's best dramas (and comedies!). Breaking Bad vet Peter Gould runs the show here, and he and his writers have an interesting way of planning out the season: they don't worry about plot, instead letting the characters and the actors' performances dictate which direction they'll head next. And that gives us an organic, character-driven story that's as riveting as its source material. In Season 2? It looks like Jimmy is getting even closer to answering the Saul call. This will be the season that tells us if Better Call Saul was a fluke or the next great series from Vince Gilligan's crew. Season 2 starts February 15.

The Leftovers – Season 3 (HBO)

Damon Lindelof's avant-garde series about a mysterious occurrence, in which millions vanished from Earth, might not be the subject of typical dinner conversation, but the critics and weirdos who did watch it won't shut up about it. A frequent addition to Top 10 lists (and sometimes perched at the top), The Leftovers made huge leaps in improvement between its first and second seasons, so logic says that the third season, the show's last, will go out with a bang. With themes of loss, coping, and anything else associated with the human condition, The Leftovers is an emotional smorgasbord for those who demand intellectualism from their art. It should be back this summer.

Preacher – Series Premiere (AMC)

Don't worry, fans of the comic. Early word on the street is that the premiere of Preacher, AMC's adaptation of the violent and twisted Vertigo comic, is grrrrrreat even if it strays from its source. The logline—a preacher is inhabited by a powerful entity and searches for God with his girlfriend and a drunk vampire—might be hard to wrap your head around, but visually, the comic appears to have come to life in amazing fashion. This is gonna be BIG. There's no premiere date, but we're thinking late spring or early summer.

American Gods – Series Premiere (Starz)

American Gods has taken a long road through development hell, but Neil Gaiman's book about a new era of gods we worship battling those of the old was a hot property to adapt, and Starz—a network really making a name for itself with edgy programming—is a good fit. An even better fit? Hannibal's Bryan Fuller was picked to run the show. There's no word on a premiere date, but we're hoping Starz is able to squeeze this in sometime in late 2016.

Just Better Call Saul, Bates Motel, Aquarius, The Last Ship, Penn and Teller Fool Us, Penny Dreadful, and Another Period are on my radar. Have no intentions of getting netflix or hulu. Very insulting that even spotify is getting in on the tv shows on the internet thing.

I've enjoyed the 3 or 4 I've watched, but pretty soon there are going to be more superhero shows than reality shows, which could make them about as non-watchable.

It looks like there is a typo in the description of The Path. It says "Also...Minka Kelly!" I think that should read, "Unfortunately...Minka Kelly."

....At least that's my impression after experiencing the disaster of her work on Almost Human.

Preacher looks really good, dark & spooky. There are just so many, but I'll have to wait and see on some of the others, b/c I'm already planning to watch X-Files & I have a bunch of other shows to watch as well.

The X-Files is top of my list right now - nothing can compare to my excitement for it

The Leftovers' final(!) season is so exciting too - i just expect the hate to flood in after the finale airs

Banshee's final(!) season is also very exciting, hate that it has been moved to April but it's gonna be worth the wait (Don't get how this isn't on this list)

Luke Cage? Really? yes, we are familiar with the character now thanks to JJ, but he was a terrible character, terribly performed by the one-note actor Mike Colter - this is gonna suck, we all know it, Daredevil deserves to be on this list more than LC - because of The Punisher :)

I loved the comic version of Preacher, and read American Gods; both are excellent. I didn't love the comic version of Luke too much, but i loved him in Jessica Jones

Of brand new TV series, there is only 4 new that interrest me.

Preacher (I hope its a good "replacement" for Constantine)
Luke Cage
American Gods (Because of Norse mythology involved).
Westworld

There is too many TV series, so i gotta be selective. Already seeing others thats renewed.

My 10 most anticipated shows of the year, in no particular order (Only counting shows I'll watch live, or Netflix shows I'll watch shortly after they're released):

Person of Interest
The X-Files
Luke Cage
Daredevil season 2
Vikings
The 100 season 3
Legends of Tomorrow
House of Cards
Marco Polo
Turn

Though, if they manage to release it this year, Turn will be replaced by Iron Fist.

... This is actually shaping up to a pretty solid year for TV shows.

I dunno, guys. I'm at episode 6 of The Leftovers' second season and so far... sure, it's different from season one. But that much better? Contrary to the majority apparently, I liked the first one well enough, though. It was just so hillariously weird.

Anyhow, now that I'm in I'll probably be checking out season 3, as well as Mr Robot, American Gods (sooo curious about this one), Better Call Saul and Luke Cage. I'm on the fence about Game of Thrones, but probably will give in and watch it, potential spoilers be damned. But no more Grey Worm/Missandei romance or Sand Snakes please!

I'll p;robably give most of the new shows a try, preacher seems like my thing, better call saul and mr robot for sure, and as a feel good low drama show i'd like to add Lucifer, think it's going to be a fun show!

I generally poop on all these shows, i think. Except Better Call Saul, that show was awesome, until the final episode which disappointed me a bit. I will still watch it though, because it is quality stuff and will probably still be very good anyway even if they went in a direction i did not really like. I might check out Westworld because good actors and scifi, but the premise sounds kind of like exploitative nonsense.

Themepark with robots, ok then what? Any good story about that or just an excuse-setting to show off a lot of "sex robots"? Sex robots always makes me bleurgh. Actually that goes for sex content in general on tv and film, but when it is robots as well it just makes it worse. If any characters absolutely must have sex because it is vital to the story, just show us a scene of them waking up together, or kissing then laying down. Cut to next day. We do not need to see more.

Oh, well in that case. If it's in your top 3...lol...kidding :)

I'm not anti Saul, I've just got no interest in watching it. After all the hype regarding Breaking Bad, I found it to be vastly overrated. It wasn't a bad show, it was good in fact, just not the "blow your mind this is the best show ever on television".

Saul was a decent supporting character on Breaking Bad, but as a lead in his own series...meh, it's not something that grabs me.
