24 is No More After This Season

... [UPDATE: 6 p.m., PST] Fox has just announced that the current eighth day season of 24 will also be its last. If I were Jack Bauer, I'd just be relieved to get some sleep after all this time. [Chicago Tribune]

... Showtime decided one new episode was enough to renew Nurse Jackie and United States of Tara for third seasons. The Season-Two premieres aired Monday, with 1.5 million tuning in for Nurse Jackie and 1.1 million tuning in for United States of Tara. [Variety]

... Miami Vice vet Don Johnson might be coming back to television. He's in talks to join the ABC comedy pilot Southern Discomfort, about a Texas-bred conservative whose (cue over-exaggerated announcer voice) life gets turned upside down when his kids move back in! [THR]

... Everyone laughed at NBC for its boneheaded late-night fumble, and we all wondered what would happen when Jay Leno returned to his late-night slot. Would he still be the king of late night? Would David Letterman continue to lead in the ratings? Well, the answer is yes and no, respectively. The Tonight Show with Jay Leno has beaten Dave's Late Show each week since returning. [TV By the Numbers]

... The Office has upgraded Craig Robinson, who plays warehouse dude Darryl Philbin, to series regular. This comes following his success in movies and increased star power and just before Hot Tub Time Machine becomes Hollywood's most disappointing movie about hot tub time machines. [USA Today]

... Discovery will place the "Sarah Palin totally hearts Alaska" docu-show on TLC, the channel about cakes and little people. Sarah Palin's Alaska will be an eight-episode "travelogue" teaching viewers about the glorious natural landscapes of our northernmost state, Creationism, and the best sites for throwing rocks at China. 24 is the best tv series I ever watched. Most tv seasons start off well and head downwards from season 2. The intensity levels are great for every season of this series 24..

I haven't watched season 7 and 8 yet.. so I don't know if they are bad/slow as many ppl are saying here.. Sad to hear this news :'(

Well, they finally stop torturing a show that has been great the two latest seasons have been so crappy compearing to the first six seasons. And we didn't need "Redemption" either. So i'm glad, but while it's running we may as well see what they come up with which actually isn't that much so far.

sincerely, this season was too slow and bored.

Guess that means no "Jack Bauer versus aliens" season, which is probably what they were going to have to do if the series kept going much longer.

Why should Jack Bauer be relieved to get some sleep? The guy works 1 day a year!

Haven't had a chance to look into it as I've been away, but I bet FOX cancels Human Target too. Guess I'll have more time on my hands. Unhappy...

@rockworm: Everyone is mad at Fox for Firefly. That was the dumbest thing they ever did not giving it a chance. Just look at the cult following it managed to get with barely a season and a movie.

On another note, I'll miss 24. Jack Bauer may be one of my fav characters of all time. Kiefer is a great actor so I'll be looking forward to the movie and hope it'll be awesome. I always hoped they could bring back Tony one more time and redeem him before letting him die. It just felt like his story wasn't finished after season 7. Maybe they'll do that in the movie.

Season 8 is not the best season of the show, but it's still better than a lot of other shows being broadcasted so to me it doesn't matter. The worst episodes of 24 are still better than a lot of crap shows on tv. The fact that there was a mole inside CTU was to be expected, but this time they waited quite a while before showing it. At first I suspected Dana might be, but then I thought she was just a troubled woman with a shady past and she couldn't possibly be the mole as well. How wrong I was. Apart from dana walsh this season is overall stable. CTU got taken out again of course, but at least it was a bit creative this time. The EMP was cool and a breath of fresh air. It feels as if they've been trying to make this season more high-tech than the earlier ones. Chloe finally got to show everyone that she knows what she's doing and to question her is just plain stupid. Cole works pretty well and Freddie Prinze is a good enough actor to portray him.

So to summarize: Season 8 is decent, Jack will be missed and Fox are idiots.

i think they need at least a season 9 to finish their like triolgies sets. but ending the series at season 8... thats just stupid. i want just 1 more season. THEN I'D BE HAPPY

I like 24 and I thought that we would get through a season without the CTU having a mole in its ranks until this last episode, and thats when I said its time for them to go, but it was entertaining while it lasted.

I'm sorry, but did I just read that the "Discovery Channel" is doing a program which "teaches viewers about creationism"?

I'm cool with religion and all, but that's kind of not just the scientific program I'd expect when clicking to the Discovery Channel

Sad that this will be 24's last season!!! Maybe we'll see Jack Bauer on the big screen!!!

I have to admit, there are only so many nuclear or biological threats that a show can deal with before it starts to become repetative, and 24 started sliding down that slope about two or three seasons ago. I will still continue to honor the show's legacy by keeping my CTU ringtone.

DOOT-DOOT-DEE-DOOOOT.

if you decide that the next season will be the last, and you decide it before to make it, you can write an amazing season with a real and amazing ending episode...but in this case, the season is already been wrote, so it will be a regular season finale, not series...damn it!!!

Well like someone said i would have been sad if this was happening last season, but so far with this season and the news am just relieved ! I pray now the writers don't got to worry about a new season they throw everything at the storylines( if they still filming that is). Frankly this has (imo) been the worst season yet

I'm torn to be honest. On the one hand 24 has been the thing that I most look forward to every week it has been ingrained into my brain so much that its one of the only shows I can go back and rewatch on DVDs and never get bored with it.
On the other hand this season is lacking in the awesome departement and I'm just hoping they end it on a somewhat good note many shows don't last 8 seasons I mean I'm still mad at fox for Firefly.

How does Showtime renew those shows with such low ratings, and Fox cancels shows like Dollhouse with similar ratings but a much greater fanbase?

GLad to have Jackie back. She's not a 'House wearing skirt', she's a really interesting character with great cast and nice story.

Well, it's been a nice run. Though I have to say, as much as I loved season 7, it might have been better to end it after season 5, when it was still somewhat fresh, and it didn't have season 6 to bring the show down. With this current season, it's only about half-way through, so it's still a bit early to talk about the season as a whole, but hopefully it picks up from here on out. The season has been a bit hit-or-miss for me, with some great elements, and some not so great elements. Either way, I don't know if this season is quite good enough for a final season. I think last season might have been more suitable for that, given the nature of the whole redemption story, and Renee's story, which basically set up for another Jack Bauer. At the point it is now, I'm just not as upset as I should be for such a good show, especially when there's the much greater (IMO of course) Lost which is coming to an end that I'm much more excited and saddened about

Yeah I miss the days of unhinged psycho Jack but I guess that happens after you get tortured and become a grampa. Hopefully this season closes off strong, but what's killing it right now is all the stupid they seem to be throwing Katee Sackhoff's way. Dana Walsh = worst side plot ever. I was hoping for at least one more killer season, but it's best to end before you start running on fumes.

It's just not the same since Jack has been neutered...how I long for him to shoot a bad buy in he leg, stick the gun in the wound, get in his face and yell, "WHO ARE YOU WORKING FOR AND WHAT IS YOUR OBJECTIVE?" I mean, last year Jack did a global warming ad....what's wrong with this picture? I want the old Jack back...

As much as I've enjoyed 24 over the years, they lost it this season. The Dana Walsh story is just terrible writing and no fun to watch. The ending of last week's episode made no sense and just seemed like a random desperate plot twist.

The unanswered question remains... if Conan had had decent shows on at 10:00, instead of Leno, would HE have beaten Letterman, too?

I'm with Enquier. It isn't Jay's fault that he was told to go to 10 o'clock and didn't do well in the ratings. This was orchistrated by the pupetmasters at NBC in smoke-filled board rooms years ago when they thought they didn't want to lose Conan to another network. When Leno asked out of his 10 o'clock contract, they didn't want to let him out, that tells you something right there and when Leno explained his side on his 10 o'clock show and NBC never refuited it, that pretty much explained it all. If NBC had wanted to be shown in a different light, then they should have immediately issued a press release telling their side of the story...it goes without saying that silence speaks volumes.
