24 producer admits season six flaws

In the most recent crop of weekly television ratings from Nielsen Media Research, there weren't many surprises. American Idol and House continued to boost Fox, taking the top three spots of the period's most watched shows. However, a one-time Fox juggernaut, 24, wasn't near the top. In fact, it wasn't in the top 20 at all.

The thriller has run into some problems this season--its sixth--and has seen a drop off in both ratings and positive fan fervor. Instead of pointing fingers outward and pinning blame on others, the show's co-executive producer, David Fury, copped to a season that hasn't been as sharp as past seasons--particularly the Emmy-award winning fifth season.

A Los Angeles Times article earlier this week described the disappointment of the show's fans, and Fury responded.

"It's been a very tricky year for us, it's been very difficult," Fury told TVWeek.com in a podcast. "This is year six on the show...you try to keep things interesting, find new ways to tell the story, and unfortunately we wound up repeating ourselves somewhat."

He added, "Sometimes we make the right decisions, sometimes we don't. I would still claim that regardless of the quality drop off, what people are saying about it, the show is still very strong and still one of the best things on television."

Fury and the rest of the 24 crew certainly had their work cut out for them in season six. The previous two seasons are considered by many to be the best of franchise.

"In the early seasons of 24, [the writers tried] to map out stories and arc out stories [beforehand] a little bit more than they did, say in seasons four and five, and four and five turned out to be two of most successful seasons. It just so happens that maybe this year it's caught up with us."

As for next year, the writers will try to avoid the problems that have come about with the current season by fusing the two writing methods they've employed in the past.

"[Seasons four and five] were two seasons where we were just winging [the writing]," Fury said. "As for as next year, I think you are going to see a little bit more of a mixture of those approaches. We're going to figure out a little bit more, so we don't find ourselves running into [the same problems as season six]. They'll be a little more groundwork done. We're already talking about next season, and we've got a lot of great things planned."

It's true - Season 6, while it had its moments, was ultimately a disappointment compared to previous seasons. Probably the worst "repeated sublplot" was the V.P. who perceives the President as weak, trying to take over - I couldn't BELIEVE they repeated that. And I think there HAS to be a mole every time, but yeah, CTU ought to be able to make it through one crisis without their computer system getting hacked into with a virus. Still, I'm in favor of some sort of repeating history - Here's what I think it's time for - Nina's TWIN sister to arrive, seeking revenge! I'm sorry, but I just loved Nina, both the character and the actress playing her. I think they made a mistake killing off Nina - she should have stayed alive as the arch-nemesis "Joker" to Jack as "Batman". I do agree with everyone that probably the dumbest notion in 24 history was the idea of Kim working at CTU. Jeez...how long is it till January??

To be honest i would've liked a chance of location and had the season explore more about the Chinese government. Maybe have 2 interlinking story lines: 1. Where Jack's escaping China and trying to link back up with CTU agents, meanwhile 2. A chinese threat on American soil. These 2 could tie into one another nicely and a new location wold've made the new season a whole lot fresher.
Obviously Jack would have to be in China for the whole season otherwise 24 could be re-named to "Airplane 3" but still, something new instead of the usual threat.

So they were making things up as they went along...that explains why seasons 4-6 were so much more showy and less engaging than the first three. Hopefully Fury et al. will stop "winging it" and the outstanding quality of Days 1-3 will return.

S2, S1, S3, S4, S5, S6

I can't wait ....I enjyed Season six as much as I did the previous seasons however i did notice some of what Fury was talking about...any way still a big fan and the minor things weren't enough to change my opinion that it's the best thing on TV. January can't come soon enough!

I love 24! I think it is the best show on TV. I own all 5 seasons on DVD. However, I have never watched it on televison. A friend recommended Season 1 to me and I was hooked immediately! I think it is one of those shows that was meant to be seen on DVD, without commercials. I have watched seasons 1-5 on DVD and thought each season has gotten progressively better than the previous one. (4 & 5 are my absolute favorites) Therefore, I am a little disappointed that people think this is the worst season. I did purchase the first 4 episodes of Season 6 on DVD and I thought those episodes were great so, maybe I won't be too disappointed. (Most here have said they thought the beginning was boring and it picked up later on)I just love the show......period.

Can't wait for the release of Season 6 in December.. bring it on!!! Also glad to hear that 24 has been renewed for at least 2 more seasons...I am in heaven.........

Are you serious? Season three was horrible. HORRIBLE. Not only was Kim's job at CTU completely unbelieveable it was also stupid, she (like Nina) was one of the few re-occuring problems that plagued 24 every season. Season four was BY FAR the most amazing because for the first time they tried something different. The model of storytelling changed, and the pacing was given steroids. That made it a million times better. Everything was simplified and less attention was given to the drawn out, pointless drama.

Yes, this season was weak. I'm happy they admitted that. The start of the show was wonderful though. Maybe they did too well and cut themselves short. As for the person who asked about 24 before all this started its called THE BOOKS EINSTEIN. Why don't you try picking them up? The novels are original stories and ONLY deal with the timeline prior to season one. Every single thing you said, about Sherry and David being in love, Nina being good, no Kim, they are all there. Even some of the good elements of the show now! Like Morris O'Brian! How freakin sweet is that!?

I can't believe those who thought season 4 was one of the best?!?! And no one mentions season three, which was amazing and probably the best were it not for season one being so original that it has to take the first spot..

Here's how it goes, please comment or post your list;

S1, S3, S5, S2, S6, S4

In my opinion, every odd number season is awesome, so I can't wait for seven!

And the only reaon I have season 6 over 4 was because of the slide Jack did on his knees in one of the last episodes before the finale, best move ever!

I, also, was glad to see Kim Bauer go. She was a terrible distraction to any storyline. In fact, I don't ever want to see another story line where Jack has to rescue anybody's kid anymore! Also, how many nukes have exploded on US soil now? Two? Three? No more of that. It's getting like the tired red kryptonite plot tool of Smallville. And no more moles in CTU. And no more viruses. Nukes and viruses have been used twice each now. That's good enough. Also, I didn't mine seeing Sean Astin and Ricky Schroder for a little while, but I hope this doesn't become a who's-who of '80s teen stars. I half expect to see Corey Haim next. Or that chic who played Joanie on Happy days.

I have seen every second of every season of 24. Even the pre-episode of season 5 (episode 0). I simply LOVE the show, but I fell off along the way of season 6. I'm back on track now, but I agree with those who say that this is Jack's most boring adventure. While falling off a while ago, I went on to see the first 5 seasons on DVD again (yeah, I have no life), and I've made the following 2 conclusions:
1) I rank them like this (Best to worst season): 5 - 1 - 4 - 3 - 6 - 2! I simply can't stand the two Kim Bauer seasons (2&3). I'm sooooooo thrilled they got rid of her (well, let's wait and see tonights season finales, wouldn't surprise me if she falls through some roof and lands on top of her grandfather and saves the day for her cousin HAHAHA).
2) THEY NEED TO DO A "SEASON 0" or "mini series 0"... What happened before everything? When Nina hadn't sold her soul, and Jack wasn't the scared soul he is now. When Chapelle and Mason were still calling the shots. When Palmer and Sherry were lovebirds, AND KIM WEREN'T AROUND. I'd like to see who Chloe were before CTU (...and Edgar, Milo, Tony, Michelle too). It would be dead cool to see what it was all like before. Maybe an episode or two about how all paths crossed before season 1. Yeah I know I'm making 24 in to Lost. But then again, Lost is (to me) the best thing to ever happen on TV. :) Don't even get me started on Lost. I LOVE THAT SHOW SOOOOOO MUCH! See ya!

in regards to boozytheklown's comment......the person who is questioning whether other people have seen all seasons to be able to quantify a PERSONAL ranking....

you have stated that seasons 1 + 2 are the best, and i will agree with you that season 1 was the best season to date but ummm season 2...you have to be kidding...unless of course, you are a huge kim bauer fan....

i mean what was your favourite part when she was getting chased by a cougar or when she voluntarily decided to go into a seemingly psychopath's underground bunker...

season 2 lost its focus and became convoluted...seasons 3 and 4 had their moments (much like season 6) but IMO season 5 was a fresh change of pace for the franchise by killing off the majority of main players and forcing in some new players....

and your final comment regarding it being the third best drama on TV this season behind Heroes (you are right there, great show) but Jericho....

don't get me wrong, i watched the entire season and enjoyed it but Skeet Ulrich is not a capable enough actor for that show to be warranted in that category (once again the show had its moments)...

a suggestion, you should check out shows such as Battlestar Galactica, Veronica Mars or The Sopranos before quantifying Jericho so high on your list

The funny thing is that even the worst season of 24 is still pretty good. I can see what he means when he says they "messed up" because they recycled a lot of their ideas (unfortunately).

But overall, this season is still good enough.

I'm still enjoying this season (I mean, it's got Powers Boothe), but it suffers from totally losing steam every so often, so there are these dead filler episodes. Plus every season the original threat/villain is neutralized and we get another worse one to deal with, but this season just seems like a mixed bag and they're TRYING to tie it up, but it's not working as well as before (come on, Fayed, angry Russians, the Chinese, shadowy Americans, more angry Russians...) The only other season I can think of that had that dead/nothing's happening vibe was season 4, and that was only for like, 6-7 episodes at the start, then it rocked all the way through. As for the best season, I'd personally say it was season 3. Season 1 was great, season 2 was fine, but far too linear and lacked the twists of season 1, but three took it back to the style of season 1, then pushed it over the top. 4 was good once it got 7 episodes in, 5 (besides the insane death count) was great, but 6... started off well and then started to fall apart, then pick up again, then fall apart, then picked up. At this point there'd better be a great well planned out threat for season 7 (and 8).

yes this season has been the worst in mind but 24 will always be my fav show. Boozy I so agree with you Season 2 is my top season so many good moments but I have to say Season 3 has been seriously bashed too much and way underrated there was so many good moments and I think the best composing by Sean Callery of the entire show with Season 5 being close second. I just hope Season 7 will go back to Season 1 days.

I am always curious as to how many of you people have actually seen every season of 24 before you say "Season 5 was the best, Season 4 was the second best, etc..." I'll bet that most of you havn't seen seasons 1 or 2, which to most of us who have seen every season (and in my case every season multiple times since I own them all on DVD) will say that those were the BEST seasons of 24... Season 5 was excellent though and is the third best season of 24 to date... The same can't be said for season 4 though which before this season was definently the weakest season to date... As for season 6, it is the sixth best season regardless of what happens in the finale, however, after the first 4 episodes it was on pace to be as good as season 5, but like others have said it has fallen off since the fourth episode. The fourth episode, in my opinion, was the 2nd best episode ever! (only behind the last episode of season 1 which is why 24 is 24)... Anyone who disagrees with me needs to go back and watch season's 1 and 2 again... After watching them you will notice all of the little things that make them better than the others, not to mention the unpredictable twists and turns that have not been repeated since... Jack is at his best and the stories are at their best and all of your favorite characters are still ALIVE :)... As for 24 compared to the other dramas on TV this season, I feel that it is the third best, behind Heroes (1), and Jericho (2)... But 24 as a whole is still my favorite show of all time and it will be hard for any other show to duplicate it...

This season was still good. Okay it was a bit repetitive..but when stopping terrorists you are going 2 do the same kind of things..there is only a few ways to terrorise a nation. Certain storylines weren't as good and some of them felt like deja vu but its still the best show out there.

I have to disagree. Although this season has not been as exciting as Season 5, it is infinitely more believable than Season 4. I thought Season 4 was a low point of the show, and more campy action than anything else. At least Jack is back to being the tortured hero again, and not just a Marwan-hunting robot.

Breaking news, Tony is dead and not coming back.

This season has not been "amazing", and the "Audrey twist" was implemented because they screwed up, I think this whole Audrey thing is rediculous actually.

This season killed 24 in my opinion. After watching 5 season of the show, I stopped watching it after a couple of episode of the current season.
The only thing I wish is the 7th season to be really bad, so I am not tempted to watch season 6 again anymore.

Yeah, everyone wants Tony back. I don't care if he's a zombie! Just give us Tony!!! :D

Doesn't really explain why season 6 has been so bad apart form stating the obvious of the fact that they've reused ideas. He just doesn't make much sense with his explanation and isn't Keifer Sutherland directing some of the episodes? Could a be a reason as to the decline in quality, but don't get me wrong, Sutherland is 24 but perhaps he shouldn't be directing it if its one of the reasons for the decline in quality...

Then it won't be interesting but here is a small idea for an episode - Jack goes berserk and takes Bill or Chloe as a hostage

Here's an idea ... Jack does not get arrested and breaks all the laws, and CTU does not get infiltrated.

And I think that's the key to the success of the show. We aren't basing it on other shows; we are basing it on 24 standards.

It is true that the series started slow, but only by 24 standards! All back on track now too!

It was a difficult season to write, I'm sure given the cliffhanger of season five, they limited themselves in what they could do and were forced to make Jack's character less believable.

I feel after the first 4 episodes there was a significant drop off and slow down of the pace. I was happy with the Audrey twist because it seemed to start building again, but now it seems like the show is stalling towards the ending.

Everyone is in agreement that season 6 kicked off on the wrong foot, and now now that the people in charge of the show are admitting it too, I think the producers and writers could always change the plot/storyline/even bring in new/old characters (other than Audrey) way before we come close to the last 4-5 episodes.

I think for a show to be in its 6th season before it loses its touch is still impressive. This show paved the way with some revolutionary stuff, so it's ok by me if they sometimes faulter. They have nothing to folow since they are leading the way with its concept.

I agree and I'm glag they recognise the fact. I could pretty much tell everything that happened before it happened this season.

One thing I would say is why does each season have to revolve round CTU? The show is called 24, not CTU, they could come up with a storyline centred around Jack doing something external to CTU with some old favourites popping up to help him. I was hoping they may have done this next season, with Jack going to China to rescue Audrey but they killed that already this season.

I think that's pretty unusual reading something similar, I appreciate that the co-executive producer speaks without blaming other people for the partial success of 24 sixth season.

The Show is one of the best on television. I agree season 4 and 5 are the best to date. Hopefully season 7 is better. Also you have to ask yourself, how many times can Jack Bauer save the day? The writers need fresh ideas to get the show back on top.

I agree, too, but I'm still going to watch the show. I won't quit after 5+ years.

I stopped watching this season. It started off great with the two night season premiere but after that it's been kind of ridiculous. CTU has become a lame soap opera with actors who look too young and pretty to be in such important positions. Jack's family all becoming bad guys was more bad soap opera drama. The White House drama was a snore. And having Palmer's brother all of a sudden become president was unbelievable even for this show.
Reply
Flag
Then I'm not crazy for feeling this way about season 6, I was starting to lose interest in the show. I've been watching Heroes and recording 24, and even when I view the latest episode of 24 the writing has been subpar with even repeats of the same formula. The torture after torture scenes didn't help it either during the start of the season.
