90210 getting modern makeover?

The CW is going back to Cali, specifically Beverly Hills. The network is looking to make a modern-day version of Beverly Hills, 90210, the 1990s Fox teen drama that showed the general population that spoiled rich kids have problems too.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the CW is fast-tracking the project and asking Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas to run it. Thomas was previously attached to executive produce ABC's Miss/Guided, but reportedly left the gig due to creative differences.

Details on the new take on 90210 are hazy--cast and premiere date have not been announced--but it likely won't stray too far from the rich-kids-in-California model crafted by its inspiration. The mold is similar to another show the CW is high on; Gossip Girl follows wealthy teens at a private school in New York City.

The original Beverly Hills, 90210 ran from 1990 to 2000, and helped launch the careers of Jason Priestly, Shannen Doherty, Luke Perry, Jennie Garth, Brian Austin Green, and Tori Spelling (although her dad, television producer Aaron Spelling, probably helped too).

I loved 90210 and I think itll be great to have a new one.

This seems like a waste of his talent. Networks are getting more and more afraid of fresh and original premises for series.

    Bring back Veronica Mars!!
At least in the Veronica Mars Universe-minorities are around and interact with folks outside of race related issues.

why do we need another teen drama?

As long as Thomas makes it into something kinda new and a refreshed version with new hot people and "new" premises...it should be alright. He better stay true to continuity and not mess up some of the big storylines/couples/past events that the original 90210 did late in its run.

I think this is a bad idea. With The OC, The Hills, Laguna Beach, and Gossip Girl - I am sure there are others that I misssed - this show won't really be innovative or fresh. Scrap this ant put your efforts into something we haven't already seen 47 times.

I think it is a good idea. 90210 was a great show and i would like to see a spin off of it. And some guest apperances from some of the 90210 cast would be great.

Duh nuh nuh nuh, duh nuh nuh nuh!Are they going to have more 30 year olds playing high school students? :)

I think the title "spin-off" is just to attract people, knowing Thomas, he'll probably make something better of it, besides, he already gave us a look into the wealthy community of Neptune, he can take Beverly Hills easily.

I loved 90210 so much, how can I not like this spin-off child. If the only thing in common ends up being the zip code, then I might feel different. I am very curious to see how they would incorporate issues and dating without being too "o.c."

90210 was fun to watch but it wasn't a brilliant one-of-a-kind drama. It was the FIRST of its kind but as the years went by, many of its successors surpassed it. Rob Thomas is a BRILLIANT writer and I'm sure he can turn 90210 into something more than a punchline from the past. I'm all for the remake.

  • carly-hope

making a re-make of 90210 sound like a recipe for disaster and Im warry everytime someone mentiones RTs name after what he did to VM. so for me its a big no-no

    Mar 14, 2008
  • SMGslayer97

I think this is a bad idea, The CW seems to be creating that slate of teen soaps with no substance. I can just see this really being a trashy show.

  • de3musketiers

I would love it, i hope some of the original cast would be in it. I liked brenda and dylan, i hope they come back.

re-run the original and instead of making a new version do another show...i don't think anybody would say no to 90210...

Please, no. Where is any originality any more?

I liked the original and I even like Gossip Girl, I doubt I'll watch this so called "spin-off".

  • tvlovinarria

Loved Veronica Mars so hopefully a show by the same creator will be just as good. I've never seen 90210, but the storyline sounds like it could make for a great drama, especially if its like (but not too close to, cause that would be really stupid and redundant) Gossip Girls. I guess I'll probably watch. Anyone know a name?

    Mar 13, 2008
  • Mastermind1486

If they could find Kristen Bell to actually appear on it, and not just a voice... Horray!

    Please don't make a new 90210.

    Mar 13, 2008
  • GODHOOD

Well if Rob Thomas can give it some good writing with decent pilots instead of just doing another teen drama then it might work out.

    Mar 13, 2008
  • Sagitariusbri86

No they should just leave it alone or just bring back Veronica Mars. I won't watch a spinoff of 90210.

  • pgsuperfan

    just bring back VERONCIA MARS

    Mar 13, 2008
  • Vital_Shot

I'm all for Rob Thomas' writing, but does this mean there's going to be a less chance of a Veronica Mars movies/comic because he -might- be so wrapped up in a new show. :?

    Mar 13, 2008
  • dude6363

Sounds exciting. I loved 90210 and with Rob it already sounds promising.

    Mar 13, 2008

Well, if Rob Thomas is writing it/producing it, I think it will turn out well. Best of luck to him.

I'd watch it, if only for nostalgia and to compare. Please, this time cast a "Brenda" that doesn't quit.

You forgot to mention Ian Ziering - he is the only member of the original cast for its entire run who is not mentioned in this article.
