A case for Carla Cametti PD

Diana Glenn and Vince Colosimo star in
Carla Cametti PD.

There's a new detective in town, and her name is Carla Cametti, PD.

Screening on SBS, it's a rarity to find a local drama production premiering in non-ratings season. But it worked well enough for East West 101 12 months ago.

Diana Glenn (Satisfaction, Canal Road) features as a private detective who loves a night out with the girls as much as solving cases for her clients. Most of her cases are low on the major crimes radar, scams and cheating partners, until the murder of an acquaintance changes all that.

Investigating the death is a cop played by Vince Colosimo (Underbelly), this time working for good rather than evil -- funnily enough in the Melbourne Italian community once again.

But Carla Cametti PD doesn't seek to match Nine's hard-hitting, sprawling mini-series, preferring to focus on its central character. When Carla's Italian family aren't running a family restaurant they usually remind her of the dangers of her line of work, their desire for grandchildren or mothering her with bowls of pasta.

But her uncle, played by Robert Mammone (Underbelly), runs an underground club which blurs Carla's lines of right and wrong. Her ex-boyfriend, played by Sullivan Stapleton (Satisfaction, McLeod's Daughters), is being investigated by the force, and her best pal, played by Nicole da Silva (Rush), is about to be married but has infidelities on the side.

As if that wasn't enough, somebody is out to kill Carla.

This six-part, glamorously-shot series was independently produced and written by writers from Satisfaction. It has exotic and contemporary tastes, romance, intrigue and plenty of European influence.

Carla Cametti PD premieres 8:30pm Thursday January 8 on SBS.
