A&E Cancels Damien After One Season

Good news: The antichrist has been stopped! Bad news: Only on TV. A&E has pulled the plug on its freshman drama Damien, the network's follow-up to the classic horror film The Omen. Executive producer Glen Mazzara shared the news on Twitter Friday before going on to thank the cast and crew of the series.

The series, which was originally developed for Lifetime but made the move to A&E where it was paired with the network's other horror film-adjacent series Bates Motel, starred Bradley James as the hunky antichrist and was poorly received by critics, mostly because it was awful. If hunky antichrists can't survive cancellation, what hope does anyone else have?

Will you miss Damien? Had you heard of Damien

Just adding to what I said before & giving more light on it. I have never ever watched anything on A&E before. the channel is crap with crap shows. I came across news about Damien show comming soon on the internet while seeking info oddly about "The Omen" to settle a debate with a friend. If Not, then I would have never knew this would even be on A&E. As well I never seen any advertising of this show on any other channel I normally watch. Other shows advertise on channels they are NOT aired on. Correct me if I am wrong, but this show never was. So Please answer ..... HOW DO YOU EXPECT TO GAIN RATINGS & A STRONG FOLLOWING IF THE SHOW IS NOT PROPERLY ADVERTISED?????????

I am so pissed off to hear this. I Loved the show, the cast, the writing. However I feel the lack of ratings were due to the channel it was aired on. Many cable channels does not have the hype as network channels & other we established cable channels such as NBC, CBS, USA, TBS, etc. This show was REALLY good & sucks to see it cancelled. what is next? Underground being cancelled due to ratings because it was aired on WGN? if Damien was aired on USA or AMC, then there would be no way it would fail with ratings & the show would have gained a huge following. ..... P.S. to Glen Mazzara .... please do NOT give up on this show. See if an other channel that is more established can pick it up.

It was good at the end of season 1 when he finally got his powers. I could have written a better TV series for Damien. Where they came up with these stupid ideas each week is beyond me. I was hoping they'd give it a second season and it would be better since he knew who he was.

Kind of knew this show would be cancelled from the moment it started. Antichrist is a good guy hunky photographer type? Seemed dead on arrival.

I also read about how it was supposed to be a sequel to the movies and thought, well, is it canon to the films? Because if it's badly received it would be best that it's not. I'd generally prefer these ideas start over in their own timeline depending on their performance. Now the films could be canon to the show, just not the other way around. Reminds of how I didn't really like the idea that The Client tv show was related to the movie. They're over a decade apart! Sure, connect it to the general idea of the movie. But don't literally make it a sequel. That hurts the rep of the movie.

My Favorite Show, I Am Shocked & Very Depressed About This Cancellation. Damien Was Superb With The Storylines Even Better Than Fox's Lucifer. I Don't Understand People Being So Damn Stupid For Not Watching This Incredible Show Like Voting For The Idiot Donald Trump. I Don't Get It, I'm Embarrassed Calling Myself An American.

The first episode was a mess. It then slowly improved to the point, after episode 9, I was all in for a second season. Then the finale happened. Such a disappointment. The first and last episodes are the most important (primacy and recency). They failed with both. Still kind of wished we'd seen more because it had such potential, but I'm not surprised and won't particularly miss it.

Limitless, on the other hand... CBS, what are you thinking! Renew it already. Yes, I know Damien is an A&E series. Somebody has to be listening somewhere. :P

Can't say i'll miss it . Half the season was Damien being forcefully convinced of the truth , despite being shown impossible things from the frickin' beginning . At some point the guy even went from being fully convinced one episode , to completely skeptical again the next . It made no sense and wasted precious time

I watched the first episode and lost interest, I'm not surprised it got cancelled, it's a risk to start a show off slow and try and build it up, it's best to come out the gate with your best to retain your audience and then if you have a few slow episodes here and there, "I'm looking at you Walking Dead." then the fans already now your potential and forgive you, but don't put us to sleep in the first episode; many of us did not return for the second.

Peak TV huh? Damien, The Bastard Executioner, Hunters, Containment, Rush Hour, Second Chance, Minority Report, Blood & Oil, Wicked City, Heroes Reborn.... Do i need to go on? What a load of crap. Peak TV my ass. For every good show there are ten shows that suck. Yeah maybe the number of scripted shows doubled in the last year. The quality isn't... LOL. The situation is as it's always been. Making a good TV show isn't easy. And to make matters worse the really great shows get cancelled. Banshee, Person Of interest, Forever, Limitless, Hindsight, Faking it...

*** starts to cry uncontrollably ***

Well not all shows can be made by Vince Gilligan (Breaking bad and Better Call Saul) ,Rob Thomas (Veronica Mars & Izombie), Joe Weisberg (The Americans) or Joss Whedon (Buffy, Firefly, Angel...)

Joss? We miss you man. isn't it time for a new show that blows us all away? oh, well...

I watched and made it through until it improved. The problem with this series: IMHO is that the surrounding characters motives don't really seem very clear. If they want him to embrace his so-called destiny, then why are they playing so many mind-games and manipulating him the way that they are. I haven't caught up. I think that I'm a couple eps behind. But it was a bit infuriating. And then all the things that they do don't make sense, telling him that they're there for him one minute, and that they're supporting him & looking out for him, but then tricking him into stuff and then some nutter killing people "for" him and just acting crazy. Then the emissary fromt the church a nun, comes to investigate to see if he really is the antichrist, b/c then he must die.

Some people have argued that the Christians should want this to come about b/c it's prophesied and stuff. But it's also a portent of suffering, doom, & gloom. Plus they're interested in retaining their power. Anyway most of the good guys as well as the guys make little sense. At least the Christians motivations are clear. But so eventually I realized that this is a show about Destiny. Whether you have a choice or not. And a question of his heritage and whether it means certain fate or whether he can make a choice to be a good man.

Also the character that he is now is vastly different from the one that he supposedly was when he was young. It seems like he was a bit of a psycho before. So all these mixed signals. That's what probably made people say nope. I can see. And have (apparently) given it a lot of thought. LOL

And there were a few creepy scenes. I love the ominous music. It was nice. Kind of reminiscent of old-school horror films I watched as a kid. Also The Ome was a really good movie. So I appreciate the effort but they needed to have a more definitive direction for the Damien "supporters" to move in. But Bradley James was flawless in this. If I didn't know better I'd have thought that he is actually American. Hope he goes and does something with a little bit less confusion.

I couldn't tell you tbh. I just know it's a poor adaptation of a comicbook, where Luci gets tired of being the King of Hell. He then decides to solve murders w/ a female cop who I think wants to sleep with him. Angels and Demons are pissed, and he's just a misunderstood omnipotent being needing a vacay who just wants ppl to do whatever they feel like:/ That's all I got from the pilot, and never tuned back in. Just not my cup of tea.
But that PREACHER THOUGH O:

I completely agree. I was reading a book on exorcism written by an actual exorcist, Malachi Martin. In one of his rites, the demon kept talking about the Great Lie that satin was perpetrating. Martin asked what the lie was and the demon said it was that Satin doesn't exist.

Shows like this one and Lucifer help, not only perpetuate that lie, but also, by making Satin the hero, serve to confuse the people watching.

Much like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid made people root for the bad guys, shows like this make viewers root for the devil.

I'm thinking it's time to stop watching episodes as they air unless the show has a basic procedural structure. It seems like most of the dramas with continuing stories are probably not going to last longer than 1 season and we're going to be left hanging.

Really wish I could subscribe to individual channels so I could cancel the networks that cancel the shows as soon as the first season ends.
Reply
Flag
May 21, 2016
To each their own & all that, but a procedural structure means that there's no reason to watch as they air, since it's the same formula week in-week out, & can be picked up at any point in the season & a viewer will not miss a step in the story. At least with a serialized structure, there's an ongoing story that can pass or fail on its own merits.

Serialization's the path to walk, baby!

I'd rather watch serialized shows only when a network cares enough to complete a story line.

It seems to me that Limited Event/mini-series would be the better way to go. Then, they only have to commit to a 10-12 episode story line and we would get an actual story with some sense of completion.

May 21, 2016
You & I agree that networks should care more to complete serialzed storylines. Holy shit! That would be a great thing on toast!

Problem is, reality states not every series is gonna be limited to a single run. Keep in mind that we as viewers don't have the same brain process as a network suit.

The network suit has no interest whatsoever in airing a good story. the only interest is airing something that will draw enough attention to watch some commercials.

Sometimes, a serialized show does the trick, but more often than not, procedurals do the trick because there is a bigger majority of consumers that don't have the time or inclination to keep up with serialized shows...it's easier to watch the same formula over & over & over again, that way, a workaday consumer can miss any number of episodes & feel like they don't miss a step when they tune back in after a long while.

Personally, I've watched enough TV to where I'm into serialization, because I want a good story that may succeed or fail over a standard overused format that has more formula than story.

Serial works but only if you have a small amount of eps. The higher the quality, the smaller the season. 22 eps basically requires the X Files formula (mythology/villain of week). Which really isn't bad; people should embrace it more. We've just been so spoiled by peak tv that we can't enjoy that anymore.
