ABC 2016 Fall Schedule: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Moves, Tuesday Comedies Expand, Scandal Held for Midseason

ABC has released its fall schedule in conjunction with its annual Upfront presentation in New York on Tuesday, and although it looks similar to the current lineup, there are a few notable changes. Entering its fourth season, Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will move to 10pm on Tuesdays, a timeslot notoriously known for being a garbage fire in the ratings department. The move will allow a new two-hour Tuesday night comedy block to form, with reliable veteran series The Middle moving from Wednesdays to lead it off. Sliding into Castle's now vacated timeslot Mondays at 10pm will be the Hayley Atwell-led drama Conviction (R.I.P. for real Marvel's Agent Carter).

Elsewhere, the network has tweaked its Thursday lineup by replacing Scandal at 9pm (the drama will be held until midseason to accommodate Kerry Washington's pregnancy) with the new drama Notorious. New dramas Time After Time and Still Star-Crossed, a Romeo and Juliet-inspired ShondaLand show, are also being held for midseason, along with new comedies Downward Dog and Imaginary Mary. Meanwhile, American Crime and The Catch will also return at midseason.

I am still amazed about how wrong i was about Scandal. I watched first season because I thought it would be cancelled after the first seasons 7 episodes had aired. It had proven me so wrong for 4 years now i guess, or is it 5?

I have this weird love for The Middle that only seems to be growing, but that's the only show from this line up I still watch.

If AoS timeslot move results in cancellation - i will throw a fit

Oh hey there Secrets & Lies - i was beginning to wonder if you were ever coming back (the first season was GREAT)

Wow! They pretty much just cancelled The Middle then. Why in the world would you mess with Wednesday's comedy block. If its not broke, don't fix it.

Dude, I totally thought Quantico was cancelled due to piss poor ratings. The trailers even looked like they are wrapping up plot.

None of the new shows are catchy enough. Minnie has for ever pissed me off for quitting The Riches and sorry Shawn but your twin is always in the better shows.

Soooo i guess its just SHIELD and DWTS for me. And truthfully SHIELD doesn't really excite me...but considering how many shows of mine got cancelled and how basically all the new shows look like crap, it's moved up in ranking.

With an eye roll and sigh for ABC, I'll spend next season mourning AOS in preparation for what might be eventual heartbreak in the 10pm slot.
Conviction in Castle's spot seems like a good sign though.

I know Quantico is its most highly rated drama at this point (which is scary, when you think about it) but Sunday's don't seem very strong thematically or ratings wise. I say this every year but I do not understand how OUAT is still on when everyone that watches it complains about how bad it is. And no one thought Secrets & Lies would be coming back.

Notorious looks like the worst new drama for the network so of course it gets prime real estate in between Grey's and HTGAWM basically ensuring more success than its counterparts. This is The Catch all over again (I'm just bitter about The Family RIP).

It amazes me the abundance of success ABC has with its comedy series - enough for two blocks (even three if you count Fridays) a week - when NBC can't even do one, and FOX is barely any better.

That's a rookie mistake, Agents of SHIELD is supposed to be family-hour material, and now it's a weak drama on a night that has no power anywhere. I like 3 out of those 5 Tuesday shows, but that night looks like it was scheduled by committee, no teeth, 4 very samey sitcoms and then a soft adventure show.

In answer to your question: not much. The same shows I was watching this season that didn't get killed, which means 3/5ths of Tuesday and 2/5ths of Wednesday. The new offerings all look terrible, my DVR will be recording around a lot of shows.

The only reason I can see for them movie SHIELD is that they don't want to compete against any of the CW superhero shows. Since CW doesn't program 10pm (yet) it's a safe slot.

Not only not compete, but let the viewers continue the superhero night. Try to snag the CWers since there is no 10pm slot for them. If that is their logic, it is pretty smart.

When one of "the big three" is afraid of The CW, that should be a sign they're doing it wrong.

The fact is The Flash has been equal or exceeding Agents of SHIELD in ratings and demo all year. Although Flash airs at 8PM and SHIELD at 9PM so it was not a ratings factor this year (Instead it mostly faced iZombie which it crushed). However if ABC had inside information that CW was being aggressive and moving Flash, Arrow, or Supergirl to Tuesdays at 9PM (Supergirl seems like a strong possibility) then yeah moving SHIELD was probably the smart move.

Looking at their schedule there were not a lot of options as to where to move it?
Monday - Poor fit with DWtS and thus a waste of that lead-in. Tuesdays and Wednesdays - Wanted Comedy Blocks (and to avoid DC CW).
Thursdays - Poor pairing with Greys and HTGAWM.
Fridays - Death sentence and they are not moving Shark Tank at 9PM anyways.
Saturday - College Football.
Sunday - Probably could have put it at 9PM between OUaT and Quantico...but is that really a better time slot especially given the competition with Sunday Night Football?

With that in mind Tuesdays at 10PM does not seem so bad. The 9PM and 10PM shows actually had fairly similar ratings this year. AoS should not do any worse against Chicago Fire than it did Chicago Med, and the only other show you are competing with is whatever CBS sticks here....(Which sadly does not seem like Limitless, and all their other shows target a different audience other than maybe Training Day?) Meanwhile you do potentially have a chance of catching CW viewers after their night is over?

SHIELD is garbage in the ratings, the only reason it's still on the air is Disney's influence at trying to prove they can make a flagship brand work on their tv network. And Tuesday 10pm is by far ABC's worst timeslot, it's killed a lot of money, they can't schedule a build up to it to save their lives.

ABC is doing it wrong, and being afraid of The CW is proof, compare The CW's numbers on Tuesday to CBS and NBC are painfully way lower, total viewers is CBS 12.8mil, NBC 8.2 mil, The CW 2.6 mil. Yet ABC is 3.3 mil. Key demo is a tighter race, but still pretty horrid:
Adults 18-49 rating/share - CBS 1.8/6, NBC 1.7/6, ABC 1.0/4, The CW 0.9/3, that's not ABC competing with the others in the big 3, that's ABC scraping bottom.

ABC needs to make it fit, not just find a timeslot, but BUILD a timeslot. They can't though, they're playing this next season by the old playbok.

Bless this comment. The CW still has Reign on the roster and ABC is afraid to play ball with superhero shows.
The move isn't smart or competitive at all, and it didn't bode well that they skipped on the spin off and moved it all the way to 10 either.
At least Netflix will carry Marvel programming, with the added bonuses of more creative freedom and not having to compete for time slots with the CW or ABC or anyone else for that matter.

Yay - I can go back to watching CW on Tuesdays at 9 and catch up with iZombie (unless they put something else on that I hate 😀). Otherwise, it doesn't look like ABC has anything left for me.

Do actual timeslots even matter that much anymore in an increasingly non-live viewing, digital landscape?

But if someone wanted to make a case that ABC is suddenly being all mean to Marvel, then that's another little hit to add on top of the treatment of Agent Carter and Most Wanted.

Even with DVRs, some can only record one show at a time. So if there's two things on at the same time one has to choose. The big problem with moving SHIELD is that means that many who watch it live will instead record it and watch it later because they can't stay up that late. And some won't even bother to record it. But advertisers are most interested in live viewers even if a show does well in delayed viewing.

Surely the pressure is there though? It doesn't look like it when you're looking at ABC programming. But if they're adhering to comedy blocks and shuffling established shows in reaction to other networks, its saying something.

The number of factors that are "pressure" get higher every time another executive wants to show how important they are by finding an untapped revenue stream. Foreign market, product placement, syndication, licensing, digital outlets, blah blah blah. The traditional delivery method of finding audiences, airing the show at a competitive time, and selling ads at those times is how the majority of viewers see the program still.

I don't mind S.H.I.E.L.D. moving back an hour, but I can't believe ABC separated The Middle and The Goldbergs. I know they're being used to launch new comedies, but I doubt any of them will last. Definitely not that stupid Housewife show.

Broadcast TV never really was much for serialized stories. Episodic stories tend to work better on broadcast TV because it doesn't require a steady commitment so if someone misses an episode they won't wait to watch the next one.

...Now that I look a little further into it, this network seems to be screwing up left and right since Paul Lee stepped down. When he ran the network Agent Carter and Galavant both got renewed. It seems he had more faith in their shows than this Channing woman.

Now The Middle is on a new night and they wedged some new garbage show that I have no intention of watching in between The Goldbergs and Modern Family. ABC, get your head out of your ass before you become NBC.

Aside from SHIELD there's nothing I'm interested in. Time After Time could have some appeal but it won't appear until after the holidays. I suspect it's going to fill in for SHIELD instead of Carter. If so it won't be more than 10 episodes long.

AFAIK no series in that time slot, for at least a year before, and since, has beaten Forever's ratings. Some did come close. The Catch, surprisingly, is just barely below.

Agents of SHIELD ratings for the past 2 months are already lower than Forever's last 2 months, though SHIELD's overall season average is a bit higher.
