ABC Breaks Up With Manhattan Love Story, Marking the First Cancellation of the 2014–2015 Season

Not all love stories have happy endings, and Manhattan Love Story just went through a bad break-up. According to The Hollywood Reporter, ABC has axed the freshman comedy after four episodes, makring the first cancellation of the 2014-2015 TV season.

Manhattan Love Story starred Analeigh Tipton and Jake McDorman as a mismatched pair trying to navigate a relationship in New York City; after premiering to 4.70 million viewers and a 1.5 rating in the 18-to-49 demographic, it steadily declined, notching only 2.62 million viewers and a 0.7 rating in its most recent episode. I'm going to go ahead and assume that people were turned off by McDorman's facial hair. Or by the characters' shallow inner monologues. Or by the fact that Manhattan Love Story just wasn't a very good show.

October 24 is awfully late for the first cancellation of the fall. Last year, the axe struck Lucky 7 on October 4; in 2012, Made in Jersey bit it, on October 10, and in 2011, The Playboy Club closed its doors on October 4.

So why did it take so long for ABC to pull the plug on Manhattan Love Love Story? The likely reason is that the network doesn't have anything better to replace it with on Tuesday nights (bet you miss Trophy Wife right now, huh, ABC?). Starting on November 4, the network will fill its new vacancy by airing back-to-back episodes of Manhattan Love Story's fellow freshman comedy Selfie, which will either burn off Selfie's remaining episodes twice as quickly or force ABC to order a full season of the Karen Gillan comedy.

Earlier this week, the network ordered additional episodes of several of its more-established shows, including Once Upon a Time, Castle, Grey's Anatomy, and more.

If you had Manhattan Love Story in your Dead Pool, congrats to you! If you didn't, will you miss it?

I loved this show! Very sad to see it go. I don't like most comedies because they tend to be "stupid humor", but this one was actually sweet and smart and quirky without being gross or talking down to it's audience. We need more shows like this on television!

I know right, most of these types of shows end up bringing stupid humour into it. This one didn't get disturbing or crude. It was perfectly rounded humour.

I love this story. Cheerful, naive and romantic couple. We would like to see continued.

I actually liked to show. Sure it was fluffy and didn't do much in terms of a tantalizing story but if you were looking for something shallow and more fun, this was a good one. It was a nice departure from the most of the shows I watch (dramas with long term story lines) when I felt like watching something mindless

I don't understand how this is news, you could have written this article before the show even premiered. Its like stating that the sky is blue, of course Manhattan love story would be cancelled, I mean the title sounds like Mad About you for rich hipster types lol, Im pretty sure thats the same demographic that refuses to own TV for some insane artsy hippy junk reason. Manhattan Love story. 5 Horrible Ideas Still better than this one: The Ava Braun Love Story - Charles Manson The Group Love Story - Little Foots and Duckies Land Before Time Love Story - Gay President An Elected Love Story - Sharknado The Love Story.

YESS!! BRING BACK Trophy Wife. I miss Bert's adorable face and his knowledge of yiddish. I am, however, disappointed by ABC's decision to give Grey's more episodes to make its characters' lives miserable. I choose to register my loathing of a once good now generally terrible and unremittingly depressing show by continuing to refuse to watch it.

I took this off my list to place Jane the Virgin on it, which was probably a horrible idea seeing now that Jane is pulling decent numbers. I tossed Utopia and Selfie back and forth, but assumed the easy-on-the-budget approach Utopia had would keep it afloat longer. Clearly, I'm not ready for Las Vegas yet....

Saturday night summer burnoff episodes would be my guess, since that's what most networks do to complete contractual obligations.

I'm convinced that the networks aren't cancelling anything just to screw with our Dead Pool! It's just like them crafty exec's.

I won't be missing this one... unlike The Crazy Ones and Trophy Wife.

Well, that's 1/5 of my Dead Pool right. Unfortunately, I doubt I'll get too many more right, considering how some of the others are performing, but at least it's not a complete failure.

I didn't watch this show though, so it doesn't really affect me otherwise. :P

So ABC is showing back-to-back Selfies next week. At least the show is doing almost OK, having increased its ratings from last week.

Fox semi-soft-canceled Mulaney by shutting down production at 13 of 16 ordered; and half-canceled Utopia, which has now become ratings dead weight even for a Friday. And one ratings site suspects they'll burn off the rest of Gracepoint (perhaps 2 per night) on Saturdays starting Nov 8.

Other than those, I would guess from ratings that A to Z is next for the chop.
Sweeps start Thursday.

These are just frauds. They cancel a show after just 3 or 4 episodes aired in the US alone based on what exactly ? The fake US ratings ? Not even the fake ratings in other countries ?
These managers should all be put in jail. It's pretty clear that they do the worst. Faking accounting, evading taxes.. and so on. That is what Hollywood people do. They are above the law. Unlike any other business.

Didn't have it in my deadpool. Too bad. I sort of liked it at first but the fourth episode was abysmal, so not so sorry to see it go. However, I'm sure it's not the worst show of the season.

Yay, that's a point for me. But also probably the only one this year. That's why I'm celebrating now.

From the outset MLS was just such a small time player on the schedule. It wasn't known at all, one barely knew about it before it started. I only noticed it when I did my Dead Pool selection. The actors weren't known either, and it had a brutal time slot against The Voice, NCIS, The Flash and newcomer Utopia (which in the end proved not to be a big hit after all).
