ABC Cancels Castle, Marvel's Agent Carter, Galavant, The Muppets, and The Family

ABC is showing no mercy. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the network has axed long-running drama Castle, fan-favorite series Marvel's Agent Carter, musical comedy Galavant, beleaguered series The Muppets, and The Family, which is a show we're told was on ABC. Earlier, the network canceled the country soap Nashville after four seasons.

Castle's cancellation is a bit of a shock despite the fact the show remained firmly on the bubble; star Nathan Fillion recently signed a one-year deal to stay with the series through Season 9. However, the May 16 finale was always going to be the end of the road for Stana Katic, who, in a surprising move, was let go from the series alongside co-star Tamala Jones for budgetary reasons. Luckily, the producers were prepared for a cancellation and filmed two different endings, one that could serve as a series finale and one that could serve as a season finale.

Meanwhile, poor ratings did in sophomore series Marvel's Agent Carter and Galavant as well as freshman series The Muppets and The Family. Despite being adored by critics, Agent Carter, a period drama starring Hayley Atwell's character from Captain America: The First Avenger, never attracted much viewership even with the giant Marvel in front of its title. In its second season, the show, which filled in for Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. while it was on hiatus, averaged just a 1.4 rating among adults ages 18-to-49 and 4.3 million total viewers with DVR numbers included. Of course, the fact that the series was renewed at all was a bit of a miracle as its first season was also anemic in the ratings department. Still, it's a bummer to know that we'll never see the resolution of that cliffhanger. The good news for fans of the show is that Atwell's new series Conviction was picked up to series by ABC.

Like Agent Carter, Galavant received a surprise second season under former ABC head Paul Lee, but its ratings were also abysmal. The musical comedy starred Joshua Sasse, who will next be seen starring on a new comedy on The CW. Meanwhile, The Family, a drama starring Joan Allen that centered around the return of a child several years after he went missing, never connected with viewers on Sunday nights. And The Muppets, a reboot with more behind-the-scenes problems than jokes, finished its first and only season with an average of 5.3 million total viewers and a 1.9 rating.

Surprisingly, a few shows managed to survive Thursday's bloodletting. The Catch, American Crime, and The Real O'Neals will all be back next season.

Which series will you miss most?

I'll miss Galavant, it was so much fun. At least it had some sort of conclusion.

I wonder why networks choose to cancel shows with giving them a proper ending, they should just give shows they wish to cancel an extra episode or two to finish the story. That'd be amazing cause it sucks to invest years in a tv show only to have it canceled :/
Just give it an extra episode, not an entire season, just an episode to wrap up the story, even if it sucks due to lack of time, at least it'd have an ending.

ABC!!! If you want to cancel any show, you should at least give us a proper ending and closure! I really enjoyed 'The Family', you give us a cliffhanger and then cancel the show?! Thanks a lot!

You could tell Castle finale was rushed at the end but it was still pretty enjoyable and didn't leave much unanswered like the Mentalist did. I'm glad they ended it, they should of ended it at the end of season 7 in my opinion.

I could have kept going watching Castle as it has been, but the knowledge that Stana Katic wouldn't have returned for next season makes me pleased with the cancellation.

Of these others, I loved Galavant, but I had already made peace with the fact that it would likely be cancelled. It would have been great to have another season, though.

Enjoyed Agent Carter, although it was not a good as season 1.
Galavant was the surprise series for me. Our entire family enjoyed it. My wife is not a fan of musicals, unless live, but enjoyed the series. My sons were laughing out loud watching the series.
Season 2 had closure but a very interesting tease for a possible season 3. I would have loved to see what happened. Oh well.

I'm glad they canceled Castle. Better TV shows were canceled or ended too soon but this boring show was still on the longest? I thought it was also a waste of actor Nathan Fillion's time. He could have been hired to do a rebooted Firefly TV series, Serentiy movie series, or another sci-fi TV show.
I also hope Netflix picks up Agent Carter. That was a great period TV show. The show reminded me of Wonder Woman 1970's TV show in the WW2 period.

I feel like Castle could have gone on without Beckett. After all the show was called Castle, not Castle & Beckett. It's a bit disappointing ABC didn't let the show go on without her. Personally, I would have liked to see more seasons of Castle. :(

Great show but it was pretty much Castle and Beckett, the only way they could of pulled off season 9 would of been Beckett kidnapped and Castle spending an entire season hunting her down and saving her and having a happy ending but that would of been very far fetched. 8 seasons was more than enough.

Castle, without Beckett was doomed to die, so finally they made a wise choice.. I wish they made the decision a little bit more timely so that people would have seen a series finale episode and a proper ending for the time they have invested.. that, I will always be angry about..

I liked Castle in it's day but was getting old, Nashville was good but not so much with the Maddie storyline, Agent Carter I watched season 1 but never got around to season 2. just got caught up on the Family was ok could have been an interesting story line, still miss Forever and I do like the new show the Catch. One thing with ABC don't get to involved with your show else it will be gone.

The only show I will miss is Agent Carter. I really loved Peggy, Jarvis and Sousa.
I'm more concerned about what will happen with the Nikki Heat and Derek Storm books now that Castle has been cancelled, effectively meaning Richard Castle doesn't exist anymore. Will an author continue to write under a fake name for a character that no longer exists? I love those books!

Didn't watch Agent Carter, even though it looked very nice. Never liked Castle. Wanted to likeThe Catch - whoa, it's ridiculously bad, and yet renewed. What's going on???

Nashville could actually move to FOX and follow Empire. That would be an awesome two hours.

It's a shame about Castle, but without Kate it wouldn't have worked. Now Nathan Fillion is free to do other exciting projects. I hope he ends up in something fun and not something too ordinary.
Agent Carter, Galavant, The Muppets and Nashville were all decent too, so ABC has really caused the biggest letdowns of the season.

ABC usually gives its shows some very long legs. A tradition of Disney-- to build up a connection with its audience. Classic short term pain, long term gain strategy. So its not that surprising some shows with personable characters were picked up in previous years despite low ratings. But with Disney stock continuing to take a hit, I'm not surprised that ABC finally gave the axe to less profitable shows.

Not surprised by Castle but disappointed at Agent Carter. Not so much that it wasn't picked up. More so in that it appeared to be hamstrung in season 2 by MCU consideration. The show was directionless when a obvious direction (formation of SHIELD) was clearly evident. I'm not sure it would have been picked up for a 3rd season even if they moved towards the formation of SHIELD. But at least it would have been far more intriguing than the mundane plot they actual played out.

Oh and the new Captain America movie effectively capped off both Howard Stark and Peggy Carter characters.

Castle is one my favorite shows, but without Stana it wouldn't been the same so maybe it's better to end it.

The second season of Agent Carter wasn't as good as season 1.

I am not surprised by cancellation of Agent Carter it just doesn't have the charisma and thrills of Agents of Shield , also in the films they caught up now with her demise in Civil War. With regards to the Muppets I am not sure what audience they were aiming for it was too rude for kids and too sily for adults.

NOOOOOOOOOOOO! Not Agent Carter!!!!!! :( DAMN YOU, ABC!!!

Also a little bummed about Galavant (though I think the first season was much better than the second.)

As for Castle, I think this is the right decision. After deciding to let go Stana Katic, it made no sense to continue the series.

But seriously, DAMN YOU, ABC! I WANT MY PEGGY!!!!

Agent Carter was a nice little show hat could've used one more season for us to have closure and see the birth of SHIELD. But there can only be so many Marvel shows on the air, and if ABC had to choose between SHIELD and Carter, forgive me Carter fans, but I'm SHIELD all the way! So I'm glad that one seems to be safe.

The beauty of Marvels shared universe is that even though Agent Carter got canceled and ended on a cliffhanger, we still may get closure for the story. They may not make another season, but there are still lots of Marvel properties that could answer those questions and tie up some loose ends. The whole premise for the show was inspired by a One-Shot; perhaps they could tie it up with another one. It would actually be a nice bookend. OR they could tie Peggy's story in with whatever happens next season on Agents of SHIELD, and she could pop up in flashbacks. And who knows where the Captain America films are going after Phase 3? Regardless, I don't think we've seen the last of Peggy Carter.

They should never have even considered renewing Castle with Stana leaving. At some point you need to let things end.

Galavant is a shame but expected. I didn't like S2 nearly as much as the first anyway.

There is no appreciation for original content anymore, limitlesss Galavant & The Grinder.

And NCIS is on for 14 seasons. So is Modern family and Big bang theory who has lost its luster.

Cant believe Scorpion is still on air. Quantico and Blidspot was good till midseason and they got early renewals

I was actually kind of excited to see Castle after Beckett, but sadly I'm not getting that. Also I know it was a hated show by a lot of people, but I'm going to miss seeing Kermit on my TV every week. Agent Carter was a decent show, but not the best. Oh well life goes on so shall we ONWARD!

Shame about Peggy. I found season 2 to be worse as a whole (mainly because it got hurt by that old Hollywood vibe and veered too much into campiness where it shouldn't have), but still largely solid. It definitely deserved at least one final chance to wrap things up.
