ABC Family Orders More Bunheads, Renews Switched at Birth, and Cancels Jane By Design

There was good news all around at ABC Family today unless your name is Jane By Design. The teen version of ABC renewed Melissa & Joey, Baby Daddy, and Switched at Birth for new seasons, and ordered more episodes of its new charmer Bunheads. As for Jane By Design? More like Jane Bye Bye. It's been canceled, says TV Line.

Melissa & Joey, starring Melissa and Joey, will be back for Season 3 in the spring, Baby Daddy's second season will also premiere in the spring, and Switched at Birth will enter its sophomore season this winter. Bunheads, the fast-talking freshman drama from Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, will extend its first-season run with more episodes starting this winter. I think. The press release was a little confusing.

Jane By Design was given a chance to improve on its initial ratings with an order of additional episodes for its first season, but the show didn't deliver. The series ended its season with a disappointing audience of 1.18 million viewers.

Yes, we live in a world where Babby Daddy gets renewed. But hey, more Bunheads! Yay!

So sad to see that Jane by Design is cancelled. I really enjoyed watching that show. Please bring it back

ABC has to know that there are viewers for Jane by Design from all around the world not only in US. So i think that the audience was/is bigger.

I liked Jane By Design. I'm a little disappointed it got the axe but so goes the tv life. Not surprised Bunheads got picked up even though I know it's an acquired taste. I like watching Switched At Birth and because of the subject matter of the show, I knew it would be a shoe in. There aren't many or really any tv shows that tackle the hearing impaired audience...or manage to pull off ASL seamlessly.

I'm hoping that Bunheads doesn' get canned after their first season, 'cause JbD got also an additional amount of episodes ordered for their first season.

Bunheads is terrible. Why renew that?

I'm still upset that that The Nine Lives of Chloe King got canned.

The 2 comedies are funny, glad they were renewed.

Yay M&J, Baby Daddy and Switched at Birth have been renewed. I love those shows sad about Jane by Design but not surprised tbh, the ratings weren't looking great whenever I looked. Don't have any feelings for Bunheads since I've never watched the show.

Damn I liked JbD what a shame, the show had potential, yes it irked me at times but it was still fun viewing =( if only I could contribute to the actual ratings...
Reply
Flag
over 1 million viewers on the final episode and JbD gets cancelled , so many good shows get cancelled , Baby daddy is below average and the jokes dont even flow smoothly doesnt feel like a natural comedy , there are some funny parts but the actors dont feel the characters they are playing ( it wont get a second season ) . Bring back Dollhouse !!!!!

To bad, Baby Daddy did get a second season.

I can't believe Bunheads beat out Jane by Design for renewal - I can barely stand to watch Bunheads. Maybe the slightly bigger names (to me at least) in JbD cost more that what they were wiling to pay. I don't recognize anyone in Bunheads (again, maybe it's just me). I didn't think I'd care that much for Switched at Birth before I watched it, but I'm glad I was wrong. I never watched Baby Daddy, mostly because I thought it was a reality show LOL

This comment made me laugh a little, because the only name I'd heard of in the entire cast of Jane By Design is Andie MacDowell, who hasn't been a big name since the early 90s.

I did say "maybe" and "slightly".

The actresses on Bunheads in lead roles (Sutton Foster and Kelly Bishop) are very well seasoned actresses. Sutton Foster is a broadway star and Kelly Bishop was on Gilmore Girls for many seasons. However, that's not even the best reason why JbD was canceled. The show pulled terrible ratings compared to these other shows. If no one is watching, a network will pull the program.

The ratings weren't terrible for Jane By Design, they were better than Bunheads..

And the Finale episode aired during the Olympics, a lot of TV Shows had lower ratings because of that.

The ratings for Bunheads has been consistently better than the ratings for Jane By Design. Bunheads has even managed to rise from its lead in, where has Jane By Design lost more than half the viewers and ratings from it's lead in, which was ABC Family's biggest show, Pretty Little Liars. It's sad to see it go, but it's how the world works in TV Land unfortunately.

Honestly, though, ABC Family needs to realize nothing will do good after PLL. Just like the CW's Vampire Diaries, fans only come to see that show and only that show. When it's done, they aren't sticking around to watch another show, they jump on twitter and stuff and talk about. Sigh, teenagers today and their urge for social networking.

That's too bad. I kind of liked Jane a little. Maybe now the main actress (her name escapes me) can find a new series. She seems to have potential.

Pretty Little Liars, Bunheads and Switched at Birth make ABC Family a good network. :D

I knew about Jane being canceled. I've said on here before about the dialogue on that and Bunheads. I also knew about Switched at Birth being renewed. A lil' sad about Jane, but I don't really mind to be honest. I also thought about some of the other comments as well.

Glad about Bunheads and Switched at Birth, but sad about Jane by Design. It wasn't genius, but it was entertaining.

Ugh, Baby Daddy. More like... baby... stupid. Okay, I'm not on my game, but that show is dumb.

I was hesitant about Bunheads but I really like it. as for Melissa & Joey, I'm glad it's back. I watch Baby Daddy but I honestly could take it or leave it

I'm still mad they cancelled State of Georgia last year though.. definitely deserved to be renewed over EVERYTHING else on ABC Family other than M&J and Bunheads!

Aw I just caught up on Jane By Design on netflix! It was a bit dull but still cute. I can't believed Switched at Birth was renewed. Now that is boring.

Jane By design needed to go. Its good to here about the others. I hate how theirs always a big break between the comedy shows though.

No commenter has said this yet, so YAAAAAY! SWITCHED AT BIRTH! That, imo, is the best show on ABC Family and one of the shows that has the most heart and unique factor than any other show on television today.

On a completely irrelevant note about a show on MTV and not ABC Family, no AWKWARD. recap this week? This week's episode was AMAZING!
Reply
Flag
Tim said no Awkward. post this week. Not popular enough for them to have someone else cover it I guess?
Reply
Flag
Whaaaat!? Why isn't Price watching Awkward? He could sub-recap it if Tim didn't right?

C'mon guys, Awkward. is one of the best, no, the best comedy on television today. Let's get it the attention it deserves, especially after episodes like last night's. ):

Surely SOMEONE other than Tim is watching it already and could be assigned to pinch hit, but I guess it's too late now, really.

yeah tried a couple baby daddy out of desperation and it was painful to watch. at least the blonde chick was cute though.
Reply
Flag
Baby Daddy is a chick show. That's why you didn't like it.
Reply
Flag
ABC Family is a chick network then.. because that can be said for everything except Melissa & Joey, which is the only show that's aimed at a mixed genders audience.
Reply
Flag
HOLY CRAP! Abc Family is just mostly a chic network. M&J (and in my opinion SAB) are the only shows boys could even stand watching!
Reply
Flag
also i don't watch anything else listed.

Yay! For the first time in a long time ABC Family cancels a show that I did not like!

I am so MAD at this! Jane by Design was AWESOME! Solid cast and the relationships between the characters had just started to solidify.

I LOVE Melissa and Joey for the very reason that it reminds me of the classic 90's sitcoms...it is also why I love Baby Daddy.

Bunheads can go and get itself cancelled...it in no way, shape, or form even holds a candle to Gilmore Girls.

HEY! Baby Daddy is awesome! Its like Reba except with non-cheating husbands and no teenagers.

I'm surprised that Melissa and Joey got renewed. Bet it has to do something about the a cliffhanger, ABC FAMILY always renews if there is some huge cliffhanger.

I have Switched at Birth until Spring and then I have BD, M&J. This show season is going to be rockin!
Reply
Flag
not true about the cliffhanger, look what happened with The Nine Lives of Chloe King!!!!

Reply
Flag
I think it sucks that Jane by Design got canceled because I liked that show!!! I really hate that shows always leave cliffs hangers for season finales & then they turn around & get canceled so then you never get to find out what happened, stop doing that, end a season all wrapped up in case you don't come back!!!

I've been seen Bunheads since day one, don't like it very much, but I've seen Jane by Design since day one too and LOVE IT, my daughters LOVE IT!, I'm very dissapointed with this cancel and very, very dissapointed with that last episode.
Reply

Bunheads is more of an unfocused, inconsistent mess with a lead character that's become more abrasive and unlikeable with each episode, yet somewhere in there is a good show.
Reply
Flag
Melissa & Joey? Wow. I bailed after the first season. So bad. I mean, it's Who's the Boss remade. They don't even try to disguise that they are an 80's sitcom (like everything on CBS).
Reply
Flag
OMg Bunheads is so painful to watch! I actually liked Jane by Design. I will never understand how half decent shows get cancelled and stupid ones stay on for seasons.
Reply
Flag
Crap. Bunheads made my list of things I hate-watch. (See other article) It is so, so painful. How much needless blathering can they cram into one nonsensical hour? (Rhetorical question. Answer: Way. Too.Much.) It's like a recycled and pathetic-er version of the very worst parts of Gilmore Girls (Lorelei, mean old lady, stupid towns folk) without any of the decent parts (Rory, Jess).
Reply
Flag
I still love "Bunheads". It's the dialogue. I'm a sucker for good dialogue.
Reply
Flag
Opposite of this. Rory was only good with Lorelai; she didn't even deserve her own storylines (except with Paris). And Jess was so so awful.
Reply
Flag
Yes, Jess was awful (I always liked Dean more and didn't like how the writers seemed to want us to hate him because he broke up with Rory cruelly twice in public). However, Logan was the worst. I can't believe he stayed on the show (as a regular!) until the very end. His rich friends also were annoying. As much as I hated Jess, I actually liked him when he returned later in the show and told Rory why she was in a relationship with Logan. I thought that would be the end of him. Nope. As much as I loved that show, those 2+ seasons of Logan really ruined for me.

Flag
Bunheads isn't quite Gilmore Girls, but it gives me the same warm fuzzy feeling.
Reply
Flag
That's ridiculous. You're the guy who hates feelings. (and probably warm fuzzy things)
Reply
Flag
Point, I do. My pets are fish; warm fuzzy pets smell. What I meant to convey is that it is basically a comfort-food kind of show (except that it is a show and not a food). It's not deep or anything, but I enjoy the rhythm of the banter and the quirky characters.
Reply
Flag
I stuck it with "Jane By Design" the whole way. It's number was up, there's no denying that.

But YEAH, BABY!!! for "Bunheads". That show is excellent, and of course it would be. ASP at the helm, co-piloting by Sutton Foster and Kelly Bishop? That show's a good one, and good job ABC Fam for keeping it on.
