ABC Family Renews Switched at Birth for Season 3, Orders More Episodes of Twisted and The Fosters

On the heels of last week's crippling Bunheads cancellation, ABC Family announced today that it's renewed the Peabody Award-winning series Switched at Birth for Season 3. The network has also asked for additional episodes—described by the network as "back-order pickups"—of new summer dramas Twisted and The Fosters. All three series are expected to return alongside veteran drama Pretty Little Liars in January 2014. Specific episode counts were not revealed.

"ABC Family has always been a home for groundbreaking storytelling with iconic characters and  families, and we’re thrilled to have The Fosters and Twisted join our lineup as breakout summer hits," network president Michael Riley said in a statement. “We are very proud of the original series we continue to foster, bringing real and relatable characters to life for our viewers and [we] know they are destined to become part of the zeitgeist alongside Switched at Birth and Pretty Little Liars."

Switched at Birth is the first mainstream TV series to feature deaf or hearing-impaired series regulars and features scenes shot entirely in American Sign Language. Twisted is a one-hour mystery about a 16-year-old who returns to his high school—and his old life—after five years in juvenile detention, and has paired well with its lead-in, ABC Family's other teen mystery series, Pretty Little Liars on Tuesday nights. The Fosters is a multi-ethnic family drama focusing on an unconventional family of foster children and biological children being raised by two mothers.

Which of these three series, if any, do you watch? If you could bring Bunheads back by canceling one of them, would you? (And if so, which one would it be?)

Y'all haven't watched Season 2 of Twisted yet! You'd be surprised what actually happens on the finale of that season. Switched at Birth and The Fosters are both REALLY good too. The Fosters almost made me cry multiple times throughout that show. And Switched at Birth too when Toby and Nikki figure out they want different things, also when Bay basically cheats on Tank. They both have good story lines. But ABC Family must be a crap station since they never keep anything up and running, sounds like they only give you 2-3 seasons then let you figure it out while they cancel it. Sorry if you read this and had to read a couple spoilers if you haven't watched those episodes yet. You'll freak on Season 2 finale of Twisted if you watch it. It's all on Netflix.

I like pll, twisted and switched at birth. I really hope that Bay and Emmett get another chance. I am obsessed over pll, but I don't get why do they need Caleb on ravenwood. Haleb was the best couples on the show because there relationship seem the realest and opposite really attract. They need to cancel the lying game and bringl back the nine lives of chloe king. Chloe and Alek forever:) I just don't understand why they canceled it the first place and left the lying game.

I don't have a problem with Twisted. I liked Switched at Birth when it started but now I got lost in the storyline. The Vineyard is a joke, they should cancel it. But my favorite show I have to say is The Fosters, I hope they keep it for a long time

Twisted turned out to be pretty good. But I do agree with JessX47 (comment below) when he said that Danny needs to talk about why he killed his aunt. I know it's a big part of the show's mystery but I'm sick of hearing the word "necklace."

I would not cancel any of them for Bunheads... Switched at Birth and The Fosters are truly GROUNDBREAKING. They deal with so many issues that other shows are afraid to touch and handle them with truth and emotion.

Now PLL is getting way OLD...I'm so tired of all of the characters making stupid decisions to drive the show forward.

The jury is still out on Twisted..I like the background story and mystery, but just don't know how long I can go without Danny saying why he killed his aunt.

Bunheads was a good little show, but flawed by a seeming lack of focus early on such as having Sutton Foster sleeping with that producer guy so soon after the death of her husband, which itself probably should have lasted longer than it did to help establish her with the community and Kelly Bishop, the mother-in-law.

Pretty Little Liars I just gave up on. I can't stomach the "deer caught in headlights" stupidity of the girls and have lost track with who's doing what to whom and why.. More importantly, what is A's ultimate motive?

Twisted is somewhat slow, but interesting. However, it could go the way of PLL. Once they establish why Danny is hiding the truth of what happened, the show is done, so stretching that out is going to get tedious and annoying. On top of that, he and the girls were friends for 11 years and no one seems to question his good relationship with them all that time? No harm or weirdness of any kind done to them or anyone else? No pulling wings off flies and hurting animals? They just accept he is some "psycho"? I still do not understand, or may have missed, why they readily accepted he killed the aunt.

Switched at Birth is becoming disappointing. I don't think Vanessa Marano was a good casting choice, as she looks nothing like her bio parents. She's too soft, round, and Italian looking while they are more angular, leaner, and Hispanic looking. Having family members look alike is a pet peeve of mine. Daphne started as a female jock playing basketball, probably much to the delight of her professional bio-dad Moffet. Then that seems to be dropped. Then she's a chef and that gets dropped. Then she's a food truck cook and that gets dropped. Didn't her father buy back the truck after initially selling it after the robbery? What happened to that? Now she's a campaign or office worker for worker for Moffet. On top of that, they seem to just throw one boy after another at both girls just to propel the series along. D.W. Moffet acts like he'd rather be doing something else than this show partly enforced by the fact he seems the least concerned in learning sign language. I thought it a big mistake to not keep Daphne and her mother/grandmother in their original home to showcase the differences in their upbringing and environments thereby creating more diversity and stories for the show. I think that was partly due to budgeting so they can keep everything to one set, but still... Finally, the Gilles Marini baby story is just stupid plus now he wants to open a restaurant? If they do not have Daphne involved in working for that restaurant, that's going to be a big mistake in established precedent.

The Fosters is fine, but this past week they made a huge mistake in the really odd disappearance of Jude from the show. I also am not sure about the seeming gay overtones they seem to be hinting at with his character. Is that why he was missing? Maybe to write him off or change direction? I have not seen this week's episode, so could be wrong there, but his being gone from that episode without explanation is just pure bad writing and direction. Also Terri Polo and her partner do not really seem comfortable as a gay couple. Maybe they will grow accustomed to it, but right now it seems forced without chemistry between them. I do like seeing Jake T. Austin in a smart role as compared to his purposeful stupidity on Wizards of Waverly Place. It would have been brilliant if that show had made him family wizard by revealing he was actually smart and learning all the time to beat his siblings. He also looks very much like the bio-mom on the show, which is nice.

Lying Game was idiotic in that all they had to do was have the girls appear together in front of Sutton's adoptive (partly) parents and ask for concrete answers. Unfortunately, we'll never know the real story behind the separation and why or did I miss something? i also would have liked to see Helen Slater's reaction to the twins existence.

i would cancel all three of those shows and pretty little liars in a heartbeat to bring bunheads back (but they won;t let me run a tv network, and i keep asking nicely). and i;m sorry, abc family can be a home to cliche convoluted teen mystery that all have the same plots and could all be resolved if any two characters had an honest conversation with one another, but can;t find room in the home for an innovative show that not only offers more leading female characters than anything else on tv but also was one of a kind, the only thing close having been off the air for five years. very mad with abc family, they;re dumb. i hope they trip on their dumb people shoes

I only watch " Pretty Little Liars" and if I had to cancel all to get back "Bunheads", I would not.
But if I had to cancel one of the three to get back "Bunheads", I'd totally get rid of "Twisted".

The Fosters is a good show to fill the void of Secret Life. It reminds a lot of 7th Heaven and a little of Lincoln Heights probably because they all have a family feel.

Yes, it's an incredibly stupid title, but totally suits the show. If you liked Gilmore Girls you'd have liked Bunheads. It was smart! I watch Pretty Little Liars and have watched Switched at Birth, but sometimes I feel the characters are really dumbed down. I liked the quick pace and wittiness of Bunheads.

I'm sorry, but since when doeas ABC family shows contain real and relatable characters. I'm pretty sure that all teenage girls can hadle being harrased by someone who has tried to kill them many times and not have some sort of breakdown. "Groundbreaking storytelling", I sermed to have missed that trough the soapy drama and cringe-inducing acting.

"The Fosters" is an amazing show. For the number of new talent they have, most of whom are very young, the acting is actually pretty good. The story is certainly original, though I admit they are just an African American child away from trying too hard to be diverse. Each episode plot gives a fair amount of screen time to each character, which has enabled the audience to familiarize themselves with the entire family relatively quick. Overall, it's a great show with a lot of feeling that deals with an abundance of social issues. Suffice it to say this would not be a show I'd sacrifice for any other.

"Switched at Birth" is also very unique for all the reasons mentioned. Mind you, it isn't the easiest show to watch as there seems to be an argument of some kind in each scene, But once the constant butting of heads disappears into the background, it's a much smoother ride. With the exception of Bay, of course, who simply has a very hard time keeping to herself and knowing when to shut up. If they were going for annoying though, the actor behind the character plays the part very well. The individual plots are entertaining for the most part, though not as interesting as they once were, so my continued interest in the show would have to be based on the characters themselves. They are all likable in their own way, and since this show doesn't pull punches as far as personal woes go, I can't help but to become invested in how my favorite characters deal with said woes and pull through in the end.

I attempted to watch the series premiere of "Twisted," and...well...it was a noble attempt. Before the hour was up, I found myself asleep on the couch with my neck in a not-so-comfortable position. So yeah.... But would I sacrifice it for "Bunheads?" Beats me! I never once saw and episode of those twinkle toed little ladies. However, considering how much I loved "Gilmore Girls," if I had a gun to my head, I'd likely choose "Bunheads" in a heartbeat. And then I'd bust out my awesome ninja skills to kill the guy stupid enough to put a gun to my head.

Violence is not the answer, folks, unless it is.
