ABC Leaves Cougar Town Off Its Midseason Schedule

I remember thinking, back when the networks' soft fall schedules were announced, that we had nothing to worry about because several good-looking shows were on-deck for the midseason. I might have been a little too optimistic.

In the wake of NBC's restructuring of its midseason schedule—which included a a death sentence for Prime Suspect, the benching of Community, and the exclusion of highly anticipated drama Awake—ABC has announced its own midseason lineup, which contains a few surprises of its own. No Cougar Town, no Scandal, no Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23. So... first Community's Abed gets kicked off the midseason schedule, and then his favorite show (Cougar Town) does too? I smell a conspiracy.

Cougar Town sat out the first half of this season with the expectation that it would return in early 2012. Though ABC omitted the show from the midseason lineup announced today, TV Line says a network rep assured the show will air sometime in the spring.

Scandal, a Shonda Rhimes drama about a PR firm, and Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23, a comedy starring Krysten Ritter, were expected to be strong entries in the new season, but their absences say otherwise. I have no idea why neither series is on the schedule.

As for the shows that did make it, here are the highlights:

– Cross-dressing comedy Work It is slotted behind Last Man Standing, meaning Man Up is as good as gone. It also means red-state-humor-driven Last Man Standing will be the lead-in for a show about guys who dress as women. And that will be followed by Celebrity Wife Swap. This will confuse a lot of people.

– Found-footage Amazon River horror show The River, from the creator of Paranormal Activity, will take over Celebrity Wife Swap's spot beginning February 7. Early word on this: It's scary good.

GCB, formerly Good Christian Bitches, unsurprisingly gets the post-Desperate Housewives slot on Sundays to make a sudsy Once Upon a Time-, Desperate Housewives-, and GCB-filled three-hour block.

Missing, starring Ashley Judd as a woman looking for her missing son in Europe, takes Charlie's Angels' old slot, but if you ask me it should be paired with Revenge.

Desperate Housewives going, Brothers and Sisters gone (who made that decision??), One Life to Live canceled for ANOTHER talk show. All I can say is ABC is sinking fast.

Hey ABC, put One Life To Live on prime time. It's better than any of your other shows!!

I think like many people, I was really turned off by my own perception of what Cougar Town would be. Between the horrible name and the original premise, I was unwilling to give it a chance. I thought it looked like Sex In The City!

After having it recommended to me by many friends who share my taste in TV comedy (ABC Wednesdays, NBC Thursdays), and especially after the multiple Community references, my wife and I decided to give it a chance and LOVE it. We just finished the 1st season, and are excited to see more. It's SO much funnier than we expected - especially the male characters. I'm so sad that it's not on the midseason schedule.

Cougar Town was my favourite guilty pleasure... Too bad. I'll have to rely on Two Broke Girls now. I mean everyone should have a 'guilty pleasure' show or two!

Hahahahahahaha Scandel isn't on the schedule. The world does not need another Rhimes show. They are all the same. Hopefully they don't air it later on. I can barely stand Grey's anymore.

If they're linking Cougar Town & Community together like this and taking them both off their primetime daliy schedule. They should be broadcast on the same exact network back to back. Cougar Town doesn't even belong on ABC Network far away from NBC for one. It belongs on NBC with Community airing on the same night braodcast. Wow! The CW & ABC Family are more smarter & pretty decent to than these people. They match their similar prgramming back to back, before it even hits the airwave broadcasting. Such as The Vampire Diaries & The Secret Circle-(The CW) and Pretty Little Liars & The Lying Game-(ABC Family). If Cougar Town & Community is that much similar to each other? Well, run them both together back to back on the same night and same Network. It's so simple as that!

Annoyed now! Cougar Town dropped, Apartment 23 dropped, a sitcom that sounds crap + a load of "reality" crap brought in to replace them! Added to Community being dropped, this is really bloody annoying.

At least The River and Missing are still on.

What is it with people these days? What the heck is going on with this generation? Why are people saying Family Type Sitcoms cannot work to this day. Just because isn't the 90's & 80's anymore... Come on now... I am sick of tired seeing pain Couple Sitcoms all time after another. They're always the same built way after next anyway... It's time to get back to the old roots again showing Family Type Sitcoms. They can still work out to this day with this generation. If they've the right Family Storyline, Cast Members make it so successful and the right Broadcasting Network and also time premiere. Come on now..,. I see no kind of difference at all, when they show Family Drama Series still to this day with this generation.

Bizarre. Don't these network execs know how to count? They know how many slots to fill in the schedule, and yet they have announced too many shows to fill these empty slots. Where do all these replacement shows suddenly come from that take over the slots for established shows? I'm bitter about Cougar Town. What am I supposed to do now? Go on a rant against my second favourite comedy network, after I pretty much disavowed my favourite one after pulling Community? Tim, dude, you're breaking my heart bringing news like these.

It's like these networks are creating their schedules in the same way as ready-to-assemble furniture. You start off with the necessary parts you need to put together your piece of furniture. When you're done, you're left with all these nuts and bolts you have no idea where they should go.

Only judging by their short trailers, The River and Missing should turn out to be great shows. Even though they're starting late in the season, hopefully viewers will still give them a proper chance. I remember seeing the trailer for GCB a few months back, and wow... definitely staying far away from that one.

They really didn't expect Last Man Standing to actually work, just like many people here, so they had absolutely nothing similar in mind to follow it. LMS isn't even that funny, it's just refreshing.

There's still a market for actual manly-men sitcoms (yes, in 2011), and the sooner a network remembers and accepts that, the better off that network will do.

That said, I actually found Cougar Town funny at times, and would watch it again if they ever let me.

You got to be kidding me here... Are you so seriously for real ABC or what here? Spring is the worst debut broadcasting ever. Nothing lasts successful as a hit at all what so ever. Look at Bob Saget & Alyssa Milano for a example... They both return back with a new sitcom on ABC during the spring debut broadcasting. But both of of their shows where cut short cancalling them. I am so sorry! But, this isn't gonna work out at all. I guess i am going to say goodbye to Cougar Town. And see Courteney Cox join the cancellaion club with Bob Saget & Alyssa Milano and also Matthew Perry co-star friend from Friends. Well, ABC if you want Cougar Town say as a hit? Then bring it back during the Summer Line-up of programming... It will do whole alot better than the spring line-up programming. Now i've the worst worry & fair, how Cougar Town will turn out to be stay as a show.

Airing Missing only in mid-march is nonsense to me .

Airing Work It is also nonsense but it's not gonna last so don't worry Tim , people won't be confuse for long!

I guess now the only network missing in the " mid season announcements surprises club" is FOX , look out for Alcatraz! XD

GCB is taking over Pan Am's spot. It looks as if it could be cancelled, although it could return for a summer burn-off if there's episodes left. Cougar Town could wind up being used as summer filler, although the network probably has decided to quietly cancel it by not bringing it back.

news regarding Cougar Town...

Cougar Town's season episode order was reported to have been trimmed from 22 episodes to 15, and reportedly won't be on the ABC schedule until at least March. Although no official premiere date has been set.[tvbythenumbers]

weird for Cougar Town... god are they going to waste airing it in the summer?

I'm confused as to how GBC is going to take over Pan Am's spot, but didn't they just order more episode of Pan Am? doesn't make sense to me. and not putting Cougar Town and Apartment 23 on ASAP is ridiculous. ABC's getting almost as bad as NBC

also, ABC really needs to stop doing so much Wipeout, you get burnt out on it because the course barely changes anymore.. it was best as a strictly summer show

ABC just blew all the respect it earned by picking up Happy Endings.

No, wait, maybe his is a vote of CONFIDENCE for Cougar Town. They like it so much, they know that it can be slotted anywhere in the schedule. That must be it! They're just waiting for one of these other shows to crash and burn in a spectacular crater, then let Cougar Town ride in and save the day for them...

I have to say that Happy Endings is kinda funny, even though the guys are pantywaisted punch in the groin of Man.

Funny show, but seriously, those guys suck.

Wait what?.. Happy Endings is a good show! I understand that networks take really bad decisions, and I haven't seen Cougar Town, but Happy Endings is one of the very few good tv shows left. Everything is being slaughtered, and in a time where Justin Beiber is the "best" singer, you have to appreciate the very very little things that you get.

Missing actually sounds pretty good, Might give it a go unlike that horrible attempt of a remake they called charlie's angels - When does it start?
