Sam Champion, the popular weatherman on WABC-TV in New York, has been promoted to weather anchor of ABC's Good Morning America and weather editor for ABC News. Champion will begin at GMA on Tuesday, September 5.
"Sam is a great forecaster with a passion for reporting on the weather," ABC News president David Westin said in a statement. "He is quite well known to our national audience who have seen him on GMA many times over the past 18 years. We are delighted to have Sam on board."
"I am very excited to have Sam Champion joining the GMA team," added senior executive producer Jim Murphy. "Sam is an excellent weatherman and completes our new team of Diane, Robinm, and Chris perfectly."
"Having filled in on GMA for many years, I have always felt like part of the family," Champion said. "As I leave WABC-TV, my home for the last 18 years, I want to thank my wonderful colleagues and all the viewers in New York who put their trust in me, day after day, to make sure they were prepared for whatever the weather might hold. I couldn't be more excited to join Diane, Robin, Chris, and the amazing staff at GMA."
The addition of Champion comes a day after GMA announced it was adding Primetime coanchor Chris Cuomo as the morning broadcast anchor.
