ABC News 24 arrives July 22

24/7, 365 days a year

The federal election-based television boom continues!

After many years in the pipeline, ABC is ensuring that its 24-hour news service is up and running by the end of the month, making sure that every twist and turn of the election saga is fully documented.

The new service goes live 22 July, will be available on digital channel 24 and is a high-definition service.

To make sure that the eager electorate can keep tabs on the polls as it progresses, the service will also be available online and on mobile devices.

"This eagerly awaited event required a number of things to fall into place. We needed to build Media Hub and move our existing channels over to the new play-out centre. We needed to build new facilities like the Chester Wilmot studio on the ground floor of Ultimo," said ABC managing director Mark Scott.

"We needed to install new digital equipment that allows us to broadcast news around the clock. And we needed to recruit and train production teams to deliver a range of new programs.

"It has been a remarkable effort to get us to this point and my thanks go to all concerned."

The ABC was heavily criticised and mocked for the glitches that resulted in it clumsy coverage of the Labor leadership challenge last month, which was blamed on the new Media Hub. The channel also came under fire for staying with regular programming instead of moving to the live coverage of the leadership spill.

Fingers crossed that the 24/7 coverage manages to avoid such errors.
