ABC Orders 9 New Series, Including an Alien Comedy and Connie Britton's Country Musical

ABC went a little crazy on Friday with pickups, ordering nine new series covering a really wide range of topics—including country singers, aliens, submarines, haunted apartments, and divorced moms. That's pretty much all the possible types of shows possible, if I'm not mistaken! Let's get to know them a little better.

Nashville

What it is: A musical drama set against the backdrop of country music. Connie Britton (Friday Night Lights, American Horror Story) stars as an aging singer who is paired up with a teen sensation (Hayden Panettiere, Heroes) to revive her career. Connie Britton, you guys!

Initial reaction based on description alone: I'm not one for musicals, but Connie Britton, you guys!

My guess at the show's chances of survival even though I haven't seen a second of footage: Listen, I'm always surprised by just how popular country music is, so I'm gonna say this becomes a success.

Where ABC might schedule it: Opposite Smash or Glee would be stupid, so let's say midweek or later.

Red Widow

What it is: A woman takes over her dead husband's role in organized crime to save her family. Capiche?

Initial reaction based on description alone: This was formerly titled Penoza, but I think the new title might only be slightly better. The premise sounds like a pretty awesome idea... for cable.

My guess at the show's chances of survival even though I haven't seen a second of footage: There's potential here, but there's also a lot of room for this to be completely unspectacular. Because it's on network TV, I say the latter.

Where ABC might schedule it: 10pm any day!

Zero Hour

What it is: The editor (Anthony Edwards) of a conspiracy theory magazine gets involved in a real conspiracy when his wife is kidnapped.

Initial reaction based on description alone: Dumb.

My guess at the show's chances of survival even though I haven't seen a second of footage: Not good.

Where ABC might schedule it: I don't really see an appropriate place for this; it just doesn't seem to fall in line with the rest of what ABC is doing. It might end up on an island all by itself on Tuesdays at 10pm.

666 Park Avenue

What it is: A couple takes on the job of managing an old apartment building in New York City. Oh, we should probably mentioned that the building is really, really haunted. Lost's Terry O'Quinn stars.

Initial reaction based on description alone: Could be cool! This was one of the pilots I hoped would make it to series, hence the artwork above; I'd really like to see a horror series survive on network TV.

My guess at the show's chances of survival even though I haven't seen a second of footage: If it's done right, great.

Where ABC might schedule it: Could Revenge move to Sundays and open the door for this to air on Wednesdays?

The Family Tools

What it is: This comedy is about a man who takes over the family handyman business from his dad. It was formerly titled Red Van Man and is based on a British series.

Initial reaction based on description alone: Sometimes the best comedies are those with the simplest concepts. ABC saw something in this, so I'm gonna guess it will be surprisingly good based on nothing but a hunch.

My guess at the show's chances of survival even though I haven't seen a second of footage: It somehow pulls through!

Where ABC might schedule it: With The Middle, Suburgatory, Modern Family, Happy Endings, and Don't Trust the B---- all returning, this has to go somewhere other than Wednesdays, doesn't it? Maybe it gets held for midseason?

The Neighbors

What it is: A human family moves into a swank gated community, only to find out that it's populated by aliens disguised as humans.

Initial reaction based on description alone: Awesome. Alien comedies are right up our alley.

My guess at the show's chances of survival even though I haven't seen a second of footage: This has a cultish quality, so I'll say it fights to get renewed for Season 2.

Where ABC might schedule it: See above, re: ABC's Wednesday problem.

How to Live With Your Parents for the Rest Of Your Life

What it is: Sarah Chalke stars as a divorced woman who moves back in with her fun parents. Multi-camera.

Initial reaction based on description alone: Ugh. Please, no.

My guess at the show's chances of survival even though I haven't seen a second of footage: Not that great. ABC's got a reputation for good single-camera comedies now.

Where ABC might schedule it: In its multi-camera Tuesday comedy block.

Last Resort

What it is: The crew of a nuclear submarine forms its own nuclear nation on a NATO outpost after refusing orders. From Shawn Ryan, creator of The Shield and The Chicago Code.

Initial reaction based on description alone: Ten tons of awesome. Another one of the pilots I hoped would make it to series.

My guess at the show's chances of survival even though I haven't seen a second of footage: High-concept. Critics will love it, but will the audience show up?

Where ABC might schedule it: This is another one of those shows that doesn't quite fit. Could ABC open up a new night of television for its more macho shows?

Malibu Country

What it is: Reba McIntire stars as a singer who moves to Malibu to restart her career after her husband cheats on her.

Initial reaction based on description alone: I'm sure someone will find this funny.

My guess at the show's chances of survival even though I haven't seen a second of footage: Not good.

Where ABC might schedule it: Wherever the just-renewed Last Man Standing ends up.

Surprisingly, all of these pickups means that Devious Maids, The Smart One, and American Judy likely won't see the light of day. We thought Devious Maids, a series from Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry about four Latina maids working their way up the Beverly Hills social ladder, was a lock.

Do you like the sound of ABC's new series so far?

Last Resort sounds to smart for network tv.

I will probably last a season on ABC when it would get five seasons on AMC/HBO etc.

I think Family Toole's is for fall. I follow Leah Remini on twitter, she's in Family Toole's and she said "Good news! The pilot I shot for ABC 'Family Tools', formerly Red Van Man, formerly White Van Man has been picked up for Fall! Yayyyyy"

I'll give Red Widow and Last Resort a chance, if I remember to check them out in the fall. ;) The Neighbors seems a bit corny to me, but maybe it's better than I think.

The Neighbors = The Gates + aliens

I would have liked Devious Maids to have been picked up, but won't loose sleep over The Smart One, considering both women are absolutely gorgeous which renders the premise completely void. I can suspend my disbelief just fine, but that is ridiculous.

The Last Resort has a horrible title, but I can't wait to see what they make of this show! Ofcourse, I did say that of Alcatraz as well, and I couldn't even make it through the pilot alone. Soooooo, ending on this note of optimism: there can be some pretty good shows on this list.

When I read about "The Neighbors" it reminded me of "The Gates" (which I miss and thought was good) which is a gated community with the people living like humans.... Though that was drama, you think putting a humor twist and saying aliens are here is gonna make this one work. Probably not.

I think anything Reba does will work out. "Reba" was a great show so I think "Malibu Country" will do great. Though the location I am not so sure about. I am with you though that it wouldn't fit in the Wednesday block so grouping with "LMS" would work.

"666..." may be good if it is done right but where to place it is the question. I can see Wednesday, but afraid if "Revenge" moves to another night it won't have that same impact. Although personally I thing the Wednesday 10pm slot is a hard spot to fill. I am so glad "Revenge" is so good that it can handle it. With the comedy block so good, that is why that slot is hard to get a show to last. If they would have left "Ugly Betty" there (it being in the comedy field) it could have lasted a little longer and have the creator ended rather than ABC.

Last Resort is the only one that I really find interesting.

How to Live With Your Parents for the Rest Of Your Life and 666 Park Avenue might be good. Will check those out. None of the others seem too appealing as of now.

@TVKing: Are you serious? They ran out of ideas a long time ago.

I dont know about anybody else but it seems like they're running out of Ideas now...

I don't want these things.

So far, The Neighbors piques my interest the most, but I'll give the others a shot, as well. (Of course, I say that, then I usually end up not getting to check out as many of the new shows as I'd like.)

The Neighbors => switch aliens for supernatural beings and you have the premise for the now long-dead The Gates (no-pun intended).

all mediocre trash!

Is no one creative anymore??

Last Resort sounds good as does family tools and red widow . 666 Park Ave could go either way well have to wait and see.

How To Live with Your Parents had my attention when I just heard the title. It had my attention when I realized Sarah Chalke would be in it. It made me lose interest when I saw it'll be filmed in multi camera however. I love Sarah Chalke, but her on some cheesy multi camera show with an inevitable laugh track will not suit her. Will give it a shot though because I love Sarah too much to just ignore. Everything else: flop. Looks like ABC will go from being my favorite channel this year, to my least favorite next year.

it's not multi-camera. It's single, I think just meant it could be put with multi-camera shows.

Gah no, I really wanted to see Devious Maids. It has so many actresses I like in it and a potentially fun premise.

Nashville - DOA.

Red Window - struggle a season with mediocre writing from a complex concept then fizzle away.

Zero Hour - killed midseason at the latest, Anthony Edwards cannot carry a show and the concept doesn't sound like something that'll work after Missing failed.

666 Park Avenue - retitled then killed 6 episodes in, or pushed to Friday (or even Saturday) to burn off the last of the episodes. It won't be done right.

The Family Tools - is this going to get retitled again? It really should be. I suspect ABC won't give up on it until it's exhausted its first season, then they'll wait to evaluate even longer.

The Neighbors - I am shocked this got picked up, it sounds interesting, it's too high-concept and will flop after maybe 1 light retool midway through.

How to Live with Your Parents - looks awful, I like Sarah Chalke but this is not the show for her. Depending on cast, will run a full short-season or eat it in 6.

Last Resort - sounds expensive, could be interesting, could be way over-the-top with the casting it has, probably won't make it to season 2. I suspect it'll try to hook via a long story arc that will only drive away new audiences, they'll move it around once or twice on Mondays and then shelve the rest until the off-season.

Malibu Country - 2 or 3 seasons if it runs with Last Man Standing, won't quite get enough episodes to run in syndication though, and will be a niche ratings holder with poor critical and overall response.

ABC's not looking so good for '12-'13.

I think 666 Park Avenue will probably get retitled, too, and that Zero Hour sounds like Missing.

about you comment on The Neighbors...it was a good concept when ABC did it for "The Gates" when a human family moves into a gated community full of monsters

I probably won't give any of htese shows a chance. I like Reba I don't think she can do another good comedy after her show Reba on CW.. That was a great show.

Sarah Chalke should really just throw in the towel.

I AM DOWN FOR ALL THINGS CONNIE BRITTON.

Red Widow - no

Zero Hour - no

666 Park Avenue - I'll atleast check it out

The Family Tools - probably not, depends on cast

The Neighbors - yes

How To Live... - no

Last Resort - no

Malibu Country - REBA! Reba was a hilarious show so I'll watch this and it'll probably get cancelled.. but REBA!

Red Widow sounds more like Scoundrels that had Virginia Madsen and tanked on ABC.

Malibu Country sounds like GCB 2.0.

Really surprised about Devious Maids, especially since GCB got canned. What's going to air Sunday nights now?
Reply

The only one of these that has me excited at all is Last Resort. I love high concept shows (still mourning Awake), and I'm very interested to watch how they will work the premise.

Will I Watch?

Nashville - Definite no.

Red Widow - The likelihood may depend on who's cast as the lead.

Zero Hour - Probably not. It may depend on a very cool trailer or preview.

666 Park Ave - Not sure how I feel about it. Could be good, good be ugly. I may give it a shot.

Family Tools - Depends completely on cast and such.

Neighbors - Premise is kinda cool. Again, may depend on cast.

Parents for Life - Definite no.

Last Resort - Will probably watch. Maybe the coolest sounding of this bunch.

Malibu Country - Uh, no.

666 Park Avenue and Neighbors sound like fun Scifi Comedies.

While I trust Shawn Ryan because The Shield is probably my favorite show of all time. But it sounds odd. You can't create your own nation with only a 6 month food supply.

Though I won't watch it. Thank goodness Connie Britton got off of AHS because that show is terrible.

And 666 park sounds interesting.
Reply
Flag
Where have I seen the plot of The Neighbors before, oh yeah, the quickly cancelled The Gates.

Swap the "in" thing of Vampires and Werewolves for Aliens and it sounds the same.
Reply
Flag
They all sound pretty bad to me. I probably would have tried out Devious Maids to fill the DH void next year. Oh well, seems like too much of a knock off anyway.
Reply
Flag
What the hell is worng with people here ???

"The Last Resort" a good idea ?

That is one of the most stupidest plot ever heared

how can you create a nation in a nucler sub ??

who comes up with this idea really

Reply
Flag
Its not on the sub. The sub has a nuclear warhead, its crew mutinies, declares independence and claims some island somewhere.
Reply
Flag
Does this also mean the The Unproffesional (from Kari Lizer starring Mary McCormack), Gotham (about a magical New York underworld) and Prarie Dogs (starring Kal Penn) are all dead too? Oh well!

I'm looking forward to Last Resort and The Neighbours and I'll give 666 Park Avenue, Red Widow and Zero Hour the four episode test, but I can say that I'll not be bothering with Nashville, Malibu County HTLWYPFTROYL (worst title ever! Including Widow detective) or The Family Tools.
Reply
Flag
Red Widow and The Neighbors sound interesting enough for me . So does Last Resort. I'll pass on the others.
Reply

The Brit show was White Van Man, not Red, and 666 Park Avenue sounds god awful.
