ABC Renews Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Castle, Scandal, Fresh Off the Boat, and 18 More

With the exception of The CW, which renewed the bulk of its lineup back in January, ABC got a jump start on the rest of the broadcast networks when it renewed 22 series Thursday evening.

If you're keeping track at home with our handy renewed/cancel index, in the drama category, ABC renewed the bulk of its inventory. Returning in the fall are American Crime (Season 2), Castle (Season 8), Grey's Anatomy (Season 12), Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (Season 3), Marvel's Agent Carter (Season 2), Nashville (Season 4), Once Upon a Time (Season 5), Scandal (Season 5), and Secrets and Lies (Season 2). How To Get Away With Murder was renewed for Season 2 earlier this season, but we'll lump it in here, too.

Returning comedies include Blackish (Season 2), Fresh Off the Boat (Season 2), The Goldbergs (Season 3), Last Man Standing (Season 5), The Middle (Season 7), Modern Family (Season 7), and Galavant (Season 2).

On the reality and news programming front, America's Funniest Home VideosThe BachelorDancing with the StarsShark TankBeyond the Tank, and 20/20 will all return next season as well.

Right now you're probably doing the math (remember to carry the one!) and trying to figure out which series didn't make the cut. Unfortunately, ABC finally found a way to kill Forever's Henry Morgan, as well as a few others

According to Deadline, ABC is also putting the brakes on its spin-off of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. The project, which was quietly developed by S.H.I.E.L.D. executive producer Jeffrey Bell and S.H.I.E.L.D. writer Paul Zbyszewski, was to star series regulars Adrianne Palicki and Nick Blood (Bobbi Morse and Lance Hunter, respectively).

ABC has also ordered several new series, including a reboot of The Muppets, a Ken Jeong comedy, and another drama from the Queen of ABC, Ms. Shonda Rhimes.

If SK isn't going to be in Castle, I'd rather they end it and keep Forever. Or get rid of Once Upon a Turd instead . Hope she comes back and the wrap it up properly. I can't see Castle going beyond next Season regardless, and still being watchable.

Peggy Carter, I love you.
Thank you ABC for bringing back Galavant. Lets make it a longer season, k?

Carter and SHIELD renewed, and the spin-off is being shelved...couldn't have asked for more. Both series are top in the superhero genre right now, but I don't think a spin-off would've been a good idea.

I'm utterly stunned at some of these pickups. Galavant was a ratings disaster despite being solid entertainment; Marvel's Agent Carter was fantastic but again tanked in the ratings; Fresh Off the Boat has been solidly fun but not seeing the numbers. And yet here we are seeing ABC make choices towards quality, and I can't believe it.

I'm not sorry they kept Agent Carter and ditched the SHIELD spinoff with Bobbi and Lance either.

Castle is a big question mark though, how can it survive if they don't keep one of the stars?

So I'm most into Fresh Off the Boat, Galavant, The Goldbergs, Agent Carter, The Middle, and Modern Family, they're getting my "most excited" votes. I'll also be watching Castle, Modern Family, and Agents of S.N.O.R.E., but not with the same enthusiasm.

SHIELD and Carter were always safe. Can't tick off the Marvel juggernaut. But I'm so happy to see they've renewed Galavant, the most original show on TV since Fox did The Tick.

Agent Carter wasn't safe at all, the ratings were terrible and it didn't have a "current day" connection to the Marvel universe, it could have been very easy to let it go.

I hear what you're saying, Captain, but I completely disagree. I know based on traditional ways of looking at renewal that the Marvel shows weren't preforming well, but since ABC owns both the TV shows and the movies, I don't think they looked at it in the traditional way.

Happy about SHIELD and Carter. Happy about Castle as well. This either means they're really close with contract negotiations with Stana Katic and the rest of the cast (only Nathan Fillion completed negotiations) or they're prepared to go on without them. If it's the latter I'm concerned.

WOW! ABC had a great season and they are not afraid to flaunt it.... Kudos to them...
I am so grateful Agent Carter got renewed in spite of really bad ratings (but great quality!)...
American Crime is also a great show but with even worse ratings
Both shows and Galavant, based on ratings only, should have gotten cancelled so those are my biggest surprise... but my excitement is all for Agent Carter's adventures!

Great news about Agent Carter getting a renewal.
Quality casting, writing, production values... no drop off in quality while Agents of SHIELD is on hiatus.
Of course Agents of SHIELD returning was good news. It made a major turn around half way thru season 1 and became a must watch show on my DVR.

Bad news - no Marvel's Agents of SHIELD spin-off :( I hope that doesn't mean Adrianne is leaving the show - I need Bobbi in my life...

Also Galavant got second season - WTF?!

ABC knew the ratings for Galavant would be terrible because their aired the show during the Winter break. But it's a perfect show for online airing, so if ABC doesn't sell it to Netflix they can use it to promote their own online service.

galavant's renewal is an incredible surprise. it was my most looked forward to show of the season and didn't disappoint. I thought for sure it was the same sort of underdog situation as the neighbors. apparently though all of these people who watch shows I'd dare not waste a moment on all came to appreciate it. amazing.

the fact that they renewed all of the comedies I watch this season helps with the loss of forever. castle being renewed assuming katic returns is nice as well. I don't watching last man standing but I'm rooting for it because the gorgeous young women that are molly ephraim and kaitlyn dever are too hot not to be seen.

I'm relieved that Agent Carter was renewed. It doesn't make up for cancelling Forever but it's a damn sight better than losing two of the best freshman shows of 2014/15.

I can't believe Agent Carter has been renewed! It was brilliant, but everything I was hearing and reading was indicating that the show was dead, mainly due to the development of the new SHIELD series. I was hoping we'd get both shows on our screens come fall, but I can wait for the new show if it means we get more Peggy Carter.

The renewal of Secrets and Lies was a surprise too. I've not seen it yet, although I have seen the original (and it's shocking ending!), but I assume it will move on to different people and a new mystery?

It makes more sense finance an existing series (Agent Carter), than to throw money at a mere possibility. Agent Carter had strong fan support from the beginning. With two SHIELD shows on the air, why over saturate the market. The best time for the spin-off is for when either MAoS or Agent Carter finish.

Why repeat the mistakes that NBC & CBS have done with their CSI, NCIS, and L&O franchises?

Agent Carter, woo! SHIELD's renewal seemed like a given, so this is really all the news I needed to hear. Can't go wrong with more Peggy.

Still not convinced with regards to that Hunter/Bobbi spinoff, though. We need some more details, like hopefully it not being SHIELD 2.0 and not consisting of 20+ episodes.

Doh, my reading comprehension must've momentarily failed me there. Suspending the spinoff idea is a smart move on their part, at least someone out there might understand that quality & quantity.

Yup, I guess Hunter and Bobbi will be safe in AoS for at least a little while.

Seems like a smart move on their part, no benefit to weakening one show to try and create another.

If they do want to add another show then it is not like Marvel have a shortage of characters that they could use instead.

devastated about forever. Happy (ish) for castle neeed a last season with no loose ends and be done with it, lost too much speed this season. The last season should be against a big bad who would be Kate's mother murderer

I'm really happy for Agent Carter, it is a nice show. And of course also for agent of shield.
Concerning Castle it appears we won't have a real ending with the next episode so it is nice that it will be back. But what about Stana Katic? I think ABC wouldn't have renew the show without her so she will probably be back for another year along the others.

Hmm... I've talked before about how Forever was worth saving and I'm obviously sorry it wasn't. But what's done is done and I will pick up my pieces and move on with my life.

One question though: Can anyone explain to me why such a show did not attract the numbers? It looked like it was well balanced, with a little bit of something for everyone to enjoy. At the same time it was not generic or derivative (at least not more so than many other successful shows). So again, has anyone any idea what went wrong?

I'm with you on not understanding. What's not to like? Great interactions and flirtations between the very hot Jo and Henry (ala castle), a mysterious foe (ala Sherlock) a trio of funny sidekicks, great medical stuff combined with crime solving (ala Bones) and really likable cast with good scripts. I'm really sad to see this show go.

I would venture it's because it was well balanced that it didn't do well. I would argue all of the other dramas save for castle on the network are over the top in one way or another. and maybe castle is over the top on the silly spectrum which is why I personally enjoy it.

I find it odd that both American Crime and Secrets & Lies both got renewed. Can anyone tell me (without any spoilers, please) whether either were any good? I only watched the first episode of American Crime, and didn't even bother with Secrets & Lies because I thought they'd both be one and done. Anyone think they're worth catching up on?

Yes ABC, yes.
I didn't really know how much I wanted a second season of Carter till it finished, I'm glad its getting a season two.
I'm relieved they maybe/probably put the brakes on the spin off. Bobby and Hunter are definitely the stand outs of the new season, it'd be a shame to lose them from AOS.
Also pleasantly surprised at that Galavant renewal.

Hooray for AoS and Agent Carter!! I'm soooo happy! *tears of joy*

As for Castle, I really hope all the actors like Stana Katic have signed up. At least give it a good last season to wrap things up nicely because us fans deserve a great ending to a great series.

I also watch Once upon a Time and Modern Family, so I'm pleased with that too.
