ABC Renews Scandal, Cancels GCB

Shonda Rhimes is staying busy. The television producer will have at least two shows on ABC next season, thanks to ABC renewing new series Scandal for Season 2. The news comes straight from Shonda herself, via her Twitter feed:

Scandal, starring Kerry Washington as a Washington, D.C. "fixer" who specializes in repairing the images of politicians, celebrities, and business people, has done well in its limited run this season (check out Lily's review of this week's episode!). ABC scheduled it after Grey's Anatomy on Thursdays, one of Rhimes' other ABC shows.

The move was good for Scandal but may have actually hurt Rhimes' third show on the network. Private Practice, which was bumped to make room for Scandal, still has not received a renewal or cancellation verdict from ABC. UPDATE: Private Practice has since been renewed, along with Last Man Standing, Body of Proof, and Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23.

Not surprisingly, ABC also canceled GCB after a disappointing first season. The over-the-top soap about Texas women starred Kristin Chenoweth and Leslie Bibb, but never took off. It was the topic of many headlines when it was announced, as its original name was Good Christian Bitches. Shockingly, people had a problem with the name.

Okay, let's hear it! Are you happy to hear that Scandal's been renewed? Will you miss GCB?

I am extremely upset that GCB was cancelled. I loved it, I am sick and tired of ABC deciding what we like and don't like. I hate the majority of the shows on that channel. I only watch General hospital and Castle. I am still livid about All my children and One life to live going off the air. 2 more shows and I done with that channel!

okay seriously? i cant even begin to describe how sick of shows like private practice, and scandal, and all this political and lawful crap i am. It. has. been. done. you people are beating a dead horse! GCB was hilarious, original, and all of the characters were well rounded. from what i have seen, it isn't about the ratings and number of viewers. obviously if there are people complaining about the fact that the show is cancelled, then it must of had a pretty decent size fan base. i would bet money that ABC was receiving some pretty nasty feed back from the some in the uptight christian community who found it offensive and degrading. personally i found the dang show to be spot on and completely entertaining. being a Christian my self i have no problem with the show.

GCB - became too mild in last few episodes. If there was a conflict - it faded too much.

I didn't like Scandal at first but am liking it more as it goes along. They are using a puzzling story-telling technique where viewers are just thrown into the story in the middle of things and are shown the reasons for reactions and relationships little by little as we go along.

As the subjects and characters are risky to begin with (infidelity, interracial relationships, gay marriage, how morality comes into play or doesn't in the cases Olivia takes, powerful, black female lead) I think writing the show this way was dumb.

In episodes 1-3, Olivia is thoroughly unlikeable and closed off (even though she seems to have the undying loyalty of her staff) and if you aren't a determined viewer you won't see the point in continuing to watch.

Slowly, you see why Olivia is so cold now and a bunch of secrets that affect everything and a secondary non-romance plot are revealed. But Shondra makes you wait for it.

This isn't a show that I am dying to see every week and so far it doesn't challenge me a lot, but I like the idea of Olivia and am interested in some of the characters, like Cyrus, and it has enough suspense for me to watch it when I've seen everything else.

It's as good as something like Bones (also on my like to watch but not drooling for list), minus the long-standing character relationships and the satisfaction having the case wrap up each episode gives you.

It may get there still. I'm glad it was renewed and am eager to see what they'll come up with for next season. I couldn't make myself watch GCB.

I HATE that they cancelled GCB. People take things way too seriously. It's lighthearted humor. I am sure anyone who watches it can think of a character on that show who reminds them of someone they know. Thumbs down ABC. I am happy Scandal was renewed. That show is just fun to watch.

scandal is the most ridicolous show that i've seen in years. i tried giving it chance by watching the first 3 episodes and this show is just too predictable u literally know what the characters are going to say or do.

I am so sad that gcb was cancelled. The show was quirky and funny, it was a bit different from all the same crap we get now days and it sucks that it wasn`t given a proper chance to develop into the second season, I think it had a lot of potential and the finale was something I was hoping for throughout the whole season and now unfortunately we will never find out what happens.. Great cast, great show, bad call on abc`s part

I am rather bummed about that, I thought GCB was cute and funny... it's a shame that a supposedly Christian constituent seems to have a problem with it, because it blends matters of faith in with trying to make right in your life among those you've wronged and the mess you've made, all while delivering some great laughs... you'd think that would be a good thing!

My daughter and i are both southern Christian women and loved this show. Yes it was over the top sometimes but that made it funny and we were never offended by the "GCBs" lol

I like GCB, I figured they would move it up to take Desperate Housewives timeslot.

I will so badly miss GCB it Desperate Housewives as well as House. It will be a very bad year when Monk as both Star Gates got axed I though quality TV is over. Time will tell.

I don't get a chance to watch much TV however, I just HAD to catch every episode of GCB. How sad it is to see that even in our entertainment media the networks have the power over us to choose for us what we like. It is no wonder that their ratings fall periodically and have issue with recovery. I fear for my other favorites like Castle, Last Man Standing and Missing. Oh wait aren't they getting rid of that show too? So they leave us hanging again with a finally we will never see an end to. Please Bring GCB back. Grow a back bone ABC!

That is utterly shocking, only ABC has the stones to stand by a show that doesn't really have a strong showing as a late midseason replacement simply because it fills niches that nothing else out there does. It's not like Scandal has great ratings or reviews, but unlike GCB it's something different and ABC chose a wiser path I think.

GCB had potential, if they hadn't gone so over-the-top, and also had a different lead - all the other characters are interesting.

This was a sound decision that made sense. I watched GCB just because...it was something to watch and chuckle at on occasion and I find myself mostly intrigued by Cricket and Blake and love Annie Potts but I pretty much suspected from the beginning that it would get the boot.

I'm pleased with Scandal. It's a guilty pleasure...sort of along the lines of Revenge with it's soapy deliciousness.

Oh no! Not GCB too! First Ringer, now this. I'll admit, from time to time it was a bit slapstick, but it was funny and different, and rather lovable! It could have been great! =(

I actually watched GCB and thought it one of those 'guilty pleasures'. But I have to say: it's not all that good really. Definitely not when compared to Scandal: after the first episode I was absolutely riveted. Now after 6 episodes I'm an addict already. Oh Shonda, you're like my drugpusher or something..!

ABC execs are morons! They keep the dull, boring, crap shows and cancel the new stuff. Cancelling GCB without giving it a second chance will mean loads of lost female viewers like me. I'm not a Christian but the show made me laugh. It was fun to watch.

Well ABC, I guess I can always watch something else on cable. You just lost me and maybe other viewers as well. I guess everyone IS right. ABC stands for "ALWAYS BEING CANCELLED."
