ABC's specky summer

Commercial networks might be getting ready to rest for summer, but the ABC is planning to keep us entertained with shows that will be a mix of Australian, British, American, new, old, dramas, documentaries, music, children's, specials and comedies. Did we leave anything out?

Get ready for A Very Specky Christmas, and Adam Hills Live, with the best bits from his two stand up shows "Joymonger" and "Characterful." There will also be an At The Movies Summer Special with Margaret Pomeranz and David Stratton guiding you through all the big screen flicks through the holiday season.

If comedy from the UK tickles your funny bone we have the political madness of The Thick of It, real life brother and sister sketch-show It's Adam and Shelley, Victoria Woods in Victoria Up the Empire, Tracey Ullman's State of the Union, and, bless them, Wallace and Gromit return in a new episode A Matter of Loaf and Death.

For drama lovers, the highlight will be a tough choice. You'll have to pick from the gangster series Hustle, the remake of Room with a View, Helena Bonham Carter as a single mum with four kids in Magnificent Seven, and a dramatisation of UK PM Tony Blair after he vacates office, The Trial of Tony Blair.

There are also some excellent docos waiting in the wings, The Howard Years, Capturing the Friedmans, plus music specials World Music Awards 2008 and the 2008 School's Spectacular.

Of course, no New Year's celebrations on the ABC would be complete without the annual Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

If that's not enough there are plenty of ABC favourites getting a second screening if you missed them the first time around. It all begins on November 16th and runs right through until January 27 on ABC1 and ABC2.
